As a viewer we appear to be standing on a rooftop or balcony, looking out towards the view. We can almost imagine the artist painting the view before him ‘en plein air’, capturing the shapes and forms of the houses and buildings as they weave in and out of each other.. There is great depth to the painting, as the layers of buildings lead our eyes further into the picture. The artist has painted in an expressionist style, with broad and gestural brushstrokes, using a non naturalistic palette. The colours are earthy and subdued, lending a sense of serenity and calm to the picture.
