Painted in 1945, this painting is a brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure study, painted in oil onto canvas.
There is a wonderful painterly quality to this piece – we get a sense of the artist’s workings, with his black outlines around the figure’s head and body left visible. There is a real focus on the forms in this composition – with planes of colour in angled shapes juxtaposing each other. The artist has used vivid earthy colours in this figure study, and there is a lovely ageing to the piece which adds to its charming quality.
The painting is housed in a beautiful wood and gilt frame with an inner linen slip. There are scattered areas of craquelure to the painting commensurate with age, as shown in close ups The paint layer is very stable overall. The frame is in excellent vintage condition.

An excellently executed mid century nude composition, painted in oil onto canvas.
The artist’s use of colour to create depth and contrast, his expressive and painterly brushwork, and the placement of each brushstroke and how it fits into the composition, are a showcase of his technical and artistic mastery. The composition is wonderfully balanced, with the perfect amount of negative space. A rich colour palette applied in long, broad brushstrokes draw our eye to the nude first. We explore the figure – angular and multidirectional brushstrokes that seem effortlessly applied have in fact been considered carefully, creating just the right amount of light and shade. The artist has left out realistic details of the figure’s body, and yet his allusions through the use of colour leave us perfectly content in knowing what we are looking at it – a fine example of his mastery with his medium and colour. The figure is set against rectangular blocks of colour which tease us into exploring the objects around the figure, while providing balance and harmony within the composition.
The painting is in very good vintage condition and is unframed. It can be hung as is, or set in a new frame. There is a lining around the edges of the stretcher from the previous frame which has worn over time (as shown in close ups), but this can be easily removed.

A large, richly coloured mid century nude study oil, painted in 1949. There is a palpable sense of ‘ease’ to the nude figure, who sits relaxed in her chair – her face and body are relaxed, with no ounce of stiffness present. Her surroundings too are homely and warm – a flower pot sits by the window with the curtain drawn open, letting the natural light in.
The artist has painted skilfully and confidently, using a rich, saturated colour palette to paint this expressive study, and has included areas of impasto (where the painted thickly such that it stands proud from the surface) to add texture and depth.

A stunning mid century figure study executed in oil, painted onto board.
The artist has beautifully captured the form of the figure’s body, using a subtle range of beige, pink and nude tones, skilfully blending the figure into the background yet keeping her form distinct from the scene.
This very masterful study features broad and gestural brushstrokes, creating texture and three dimensionality while still maintaining its wonderfully delicate nature.
This small yet powerful oil painting is housed in a very complementary gilt frame. There is a very small area of surface loss to the top edge of the painting, as shown in close ups, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. There is very minor scuffing to the frame.

A striking and emotive large mid 20th century modernist style nude portrait, executed in oil on canvas.
A seated nude is depicted against a wonderfully painted backdrop. With her head resting on her hand, she is in a pensive pose, deep in thought.
At first glance, this semi-abstracted depiction of the nude figure may seem simple, but as we spend time to look at the colours and brushstrokes, we soon realise its complexity.
Using a wide array of colours including darker pastel shades and nude tones, the artist displays an excellent understanding of colour theory as layers and pairs of contrasting shades sit beside and on top of one another, blending together effortlessly and harmoniously.
The painting is composed with swatches of colours, each brushstroke executed back and forth with so much vigour and zest, almost a projection of the artist’s or the nude’s inner emotional state.
This oil on canvas sits in a beautiful gilt frame with an inner dark wood window as well as linen lining. The colours of the frame complement the painting extremely well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

An excellently executed nude figure study in pastel, framed behind glass.
This nude study captures the female form elegantly and expressively. The artist has used long, narrow lines to outline the form, and used hatching to capture the three dimensionality of the form of the body, giving the drawing a sculptural quality. A different technique has been used to fill in the background – it seems the artist has used the pastel to colour over a textured surface to create a dappled effect.
The pastel has been beautifully framed in a wood and gilt frame, and is set behind glass to protect the vulnerability of the medium. Both pastel and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

We see a female figure en verso, her form reduced to a series of thin outlines in black. An emotional vintage nude oil portrait, painted in 1948. This mid century oil on board is a raw yet beautiful depiction of sadness and sorrow. A sole nude female figure sits with her head between her knees, with nothing around her except for the green stool she is seated on. Her face is concealed by her arm, adding to the idea that sadness is a human condition experienced by many, and a reminder that we are not alone when we feel fragile or negative
The painting is housed in a distressed gilt frame with an inner white window, which suits the painting very well. The painting has areas of paint loss and flaking (perhaps an uncanny reflection of the fragility and vulnerability of the portrait in the painting).

A fantastic modernist style portrait, painted in oil onto board. The artist has used smooth, distinct brushstrokes to compose the figure, leaving out realistic details and features. There is a sense of timeless-ness to this piece, where place, time and context are not present. One of the most attractive features of this piece is the way in which the artist has skilfully allowed the board to show through and has even incorporated it such that it adds to both depth and shade. We also get a sense of the ‘behind the scenes’ workings of the artist which certainly adds to the charm of the piece.

An interior scene painted in a muted and earthy palette, showing a shadowy interior with a group of figures painted in a modernist style. The artist has used the medium of tempera to paint this picture, which is the technique of painting with pigments bound in a water-soluble emulsion, such as water and egg yolk, or an oil-in-water emulsion such as oil and egg. Tempera dries to a hard, fairly translucent film, which in this case enables us to see the drawing beneath the painting, giving us a rare view of the artist’s workings.
The painting is very beautifully presented in a pine box frame, and is in good vintage condition. There are some minor surface paint losses to the right side but these do not detract from the overall charm of the picture.

A gorgeous impressionist oil painting depicting a lady in a hat seated out in a garden, reminiscent of the style of the French painter Auguste Renoir. This artwork has a sense of the romantic, and in its colour palette and brush work there is a soft-focus evocation of a halcyon day. The artist has used the same comma-like brushwork pattern for both sitter and background, creating a rather romantic effect where the dappled sunlight on the leaves of the trees has cast a similar light on the sitter’s body and chair, so she beautifully blends into her surroundings.
It is housed in a very unique frame. Within the outer gilt frame there is a grey slip which has speckles of coloured paint lightly applied to it. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A wonderfully painted modernist composition of a female nude figure, skilfully executed in oil in 1942. The model is portrayed in a home setting, seated on a bench against a sanguine and green background. With her gaze facing away from the viewer, she is unaware and caught up in her own thoughts.
Expressive and swift brushstrokes have been executed in a confident manner. The artist demonstrates a deep understanding of the relationship of colours, and also of the human body. Not only has he captured the curves of her anatomy wonderfully, but has also mixed and layered the various earthy tones to render the complex nature of skin perfectly and with great emotion.
This oil on canvas is in good vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary wood frame lined with linen and an inner white border. The mid century frame has signs of ageing that are typical for its age, but these imperfections add to the charm of the piece.

This large abstracted depiction of the female figure may seem simple at first glance, but as we spend the time to look at its forms, lines and colours, we soon realise its complexity. In some ways a reminder of the Nude Blue cut-outs series by Henri Matisse, the nude figure in this painting has been abstracted down to a group of shapes and colours. The artist has avoided any attempt to mimic reality and has instead used blocks of soft yet contrasting colours to create a sense of space and three dimensionality. Paint has been applied lightly and sparsely, allowing the raw canvas to show through.
Painted by in 1968, this wonderful oil is housed in a red and gilt wood frame with a linen slip, and is in excellent condition with some minor scuffs to the frame.

An absolutely stunning mid 20th century oil painting of a female nude on a lounge chair in a reclined position.
The female figure is well-composed and has an air of confidence. Her hair is styled in a bun, without a single strand out of place. At work, she is a woman of power, and she has just returned home after a long day of negotiating deals, wanting to unwind.
The viewer is unable to make eye contact, as she is faced away gazing to the distance, and appears to be caught up in her thoughts, and not wishing to be interrupted.
Her body recognises that it is time to unwind and leave one’s worries behind, as she is sat in a relaxed manner – with her slender legs stretched out, and her hands laid across the arm rests.
It is signed and dated 1943 to the lower left, and is complemented by its gilt frame.

Bathers in art have been a long-standing tradition since the Renaissance, and this artwork in particular is reminiscent of the bathing scenes from Paul Cezanne.
The forms of the two nudes are bold and well emphasised, as their silhouettes have been outlined by thick black lines .The artist has used quick and short brushstrokes, as well as heavy impasto to create a sense of three dimensionality in this work. An excellent composition of a nude study in gouache, depicting a female figure perched on a stool. There is a palpable tension within this picture. With her legs raised, the muse grips the rear legs of the stool, balancing her slender figure on the equally slender wooden stool.
