The artist has left out realistic details of the figure’s body, and yet his allusions through the use of colour leave us perfectly content in knowing what we are looking at it – a fine example of his mastery with his medium and colour. The figure is set against rectangular blocks of colour which tease us into exploring the objects around the figure, while providing balance and harmony within the composition.

    An intriguing and very confidently executed large oil on canvas, painted in 1987 by female Swedish artist Marianne Kanter, who monogram can be seen in the top left corner.

    On first glance the painting seems almost voyeuristic – we see the backs of two men staring at the undressed female figure. As we take the time to study the painting, in particular the female figure, we begin to notice her expression – she stares directly at us with an enigmatic gaze, completely aware of her position in the room and the attention she holds, both from us as well as the male figures we see. Her confidence is unmissable. Notably, the painting is by a female artist (Marianne Kanter). Could it be that this painting was a comment on the ‘male gaze’, a term coined a few years before in the 70s? We might never know the answer for sure, but it certainly makes the painting a beguiling and intriguing one.

    A large, richly coloured mid century nude study oil, painted in 1949.  There is a palpable sense of ‘ease’ to the nude figure, who sits relaxed in her chair – her face and body are relaxed, with no ounce of stiffness present. Her surroundings too are homely and warm – a flower pot sits by the window with the curtain drawn open, letting the natural light in.

    The artist has painted skilfully and confidently, using a rich, saturated colour palette to paint this expressive study, and has included areas of impasto (where the painted thickly such that it stands proud from the surface)  to add texture and depth.

    The painting is housed in its original mid century dark bronze wood frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

    There is a wonderful painterly quality to this piece – we get a sense of the artist’s workings, with his black outlines around the figure’s head and body left visible. There is a real focus on the forms in this composition – with planes of colour in angled shapes juxtaposing each other. The artist has used vivid earthy colours in this figure study, and there is a lovely ageing to the piece which adds to its charming quality.

    The artist has beautifully captured the form of the figure’s body, using a subtle range of beige, pink and nude tones, skilfully blending the figure into the background yet keeping her form distinct from the scene.

    This very masterful study features broad and gestural brushstrokes, creating texture and three dimensionality while still maintaining its wonderfully delicate nature.

There is a very small area of surface loss to the top edge of the painting, as shown in close ups, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.
