The figures appear to be sitting on a river bank, with one figure looking out towards the water. The artist has contrasted the richer, earthier colours of green, brown and dark blue, against the lighter blue of the background which alludes to the water or sky.

    The oil on canvas board is presented in a gilt frame that suits it very well. There is a light crease line on the canvas that has been laid to the board but this is does not detract from the overall appearance.

    A unique abstract collograph by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, executed with carbon black oil on fabriano printmaking paper, and beautifully presented in a double card mount with blue detail, within a gilt frame.

    This collograph is described as such because the base of the plate is cardboard rather than metal. Frances would have started with a shiny surface, carving away to reveal the matt surface underneath. This is an intaglio method where the ink stays within the recess, once the plate is sealed and inked up it is then printed through a press; a heavy metal roller on a flat bed. The pressure transfers the print onto dampened paper. With this particular print Frances used papers and texture to add colour while the plate was printed in carbon black oil based ink on fabriano printmaking paper. She decided to only print this plate once which is why it’s a 1/1 , making it entirely unique.

    Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count. 

    The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has very cleverly reduced the scene down to flat planes of colour, creating a cubist, geometric effect in the composition, bringing our attention to the fact that this is indeed a painting on a surface, shaped by the artist’s own view and perception, as opposed to a realistic depiction of a boat by a shed. Yet details like the stillness of the water, the reflection of the boat, and the structures involved are still so masterfully captured.
