A mid century limited edition (50/310) coloured lithograph, signed by Esaias Thorén.

Esaias Thorén (1901-81) was a Swedish artist who studied in Paris in the 1920s with Carl Wilhelmson. While there he visited Fernand Léger’s studio and was influenced by his approach.  Initially inspired by cubism he later developed more as a surrealist artist in the 1930s and was part of a group of artists in Halmstad group who followed that approach including Waldemar Lorentzon, Axel and Eric Olson each of whom went on to become notable artists in their own right. He exhibited widely in Sweden where is is well-known and collected as a leading Swedish modernist. His work is represented in the Museum of Modern art in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum and the Malmo Museum.

This mid century print is housed behind glass in a very complementary metal frame. There is a very small crack in the glass to the lower left which is visible upon close inspection. It does not detract from the artwork and the overall appeal of the piece, which is in good condition otherwise.

A large and very well executed 1959 limited edition (28/30) lithograph, signed by Waldemar Sjölander.

The artist uses  tonal gradation, outlines, and shapes to create this playful composition. The figure is fragmented into several three dimensional forms, and plays on optical illusion. The artist converges the shadows of the figure with its three dimensional form, teasing our eyes which weave in and out of the shapes.

This mid century print is laid onto a white mount, and housed behind glass in a very complementary gilt frame. Both print and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Girl with Pots

    £355

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking and vibrant mid century semi-abstract composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

A myriad of patterns and colours have been applied to the canvas, creating a wonderful scene of a seated lady surrounded by pots and plants. To the top left we see the suggestion of trees, and then to the middle ground a range of leafy plants around the seated figure. The scene is punctuated by a large bowl, covered in a colourful pattern. The artist skilfully uses colour and shape to its full potential, combining a mix of both fluid expressive brushstrokes with more controlled, restrained angled shapes. The composition is such an expression of liveliness and playfulness, with all the individual elements bouncing off one another and yet harmonising wonderfully.

This oil on canvas is housed in white wood frame with an inner silver window that pairs perfectly with the painting. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Dancer

    £410

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A distinctly modernist oil portrait of an African female figure in tribal dress, painted in 1959.

Deep and rich planes of colours fill the canvas, with angular forms and distinct lines building up into a semi abstract portrait. We see the figure in side profile, arms and legs in the midst of movement.  The artist teases our eye – we are unable to discern where her dress and legs end, and where the background begins. Angled planes of white surrounding the figure illuminate her  upper body, skilfully narrowing our eyes towards the main figure, before then dispersing as the body and background become indistinguishable.

The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork. Do not that some glare is present in the photographs.

This oil on board is housed in a wood frame that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are areas of light craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but is in good vintage condition overall.

  • Seated Figure

    £370

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A very well executed oil portrait, painted onto canvas in 1966.

Painted in an expressionist style, broad and painterly brushstrokes make up this striking composition of a seated figure. The artist has left out realistic details,  focusing instead on the shape, form and lines of the figure. He has captured the way the light falls on the figure, using an almost post-impressionist colour palette to depict the areas of shadow on light on the figure’s coat. The artist has left the background indistinct, but has used a palette that plays off the colours on the figure wonderfully. There is a very harmonious balance in the overall composition of this painting, making it a real pleasure to look at.

The painting is housed in dark brown frame with a an inner linen lined window. Both frame and painting are in excellent vintage condition. Please note that the lighter looking areas in the photos are not to do with any issues in the painting, but due instead to glare from natural light when taking the photos.

  • Figure in Pastel

    £360

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An excellently executed nude figure study in pastel, framed behind glass.

This nude study captures the female form elegantly and expressively. The artist has used long, narrow lines to outline the form, and used hatching to capture the three dimensionality of the  form of the body, giving the drawing a sculptural quality. A different technique has been used to fill in the background – it seems the artist has used the pastel to colour over a textured surface to create a dappled effect.

The pastel has been beautifully framed in a wood and gilt frame, and is set behind glass to protect the vulnerability of the medium. Both pastel and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Portrait in Purple

    £440

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A semi abstract mid century portrait in oil, painted in 1943.

This unique portrait features an abstracted figure with his hands together, depicted in a painterly style. Loose and broad brushstrokes have been applied in several layers, created a wonderful depth, complexity and illumination to the painting. As we take the time to study the painting, the varying layers slowly reveal themselves, giving us an insight into the artist’s process.

Just as unique as the painting is the frame in which it is housed in. Set in a purple-blue frame with decorative indents evenly spaced around the frame, it adds a real element of interest to the painting and also complements the colour palette of the painting beautifully.

Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition. There is some minor wear to the inner window of the frame but this certainly does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Red Shoes

    £320

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A charming mid century portrait painted in oil onto board, depicted a seated figure of a young boy.

The artist has painted the figure in an expressionist style, using a very restrained palette and bold outlines to create the composition. This simple yet striking composition shows a young boy seated, reading a book. There is a particularly raw quality to this portrait – the artist has combined an earthy palette with broad and loose brushstrokes. There is a varied style to the application of paint, with some areas loose and thin, while others thicker and with layers of impasto. The artist appears to have painted the figure quickly and with vigour, yet it is clear that his expressive strokes remained controlled and intentional. Elements of the way this has been painted are reminiscent of the fluidity and expressiveness of the art of Chinese calligraphy.

This oil on board is framed in a double window gilt frame with a linen lined border. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Family

    £380

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A modernist oil on canvas depicting a family on a walk, painted in 1980.

Painted with a typically modernist ethos, all realistic details have been condensed down into flat planes of colour that give the illusion of three dimensionality. Featuring elements of cubism, the artist has used blocks of colour that have been outlined distinctly to create this unique composition. We are still able to discern a group of figures (2 adults and three children) walking along a what appears to be a coastal landscape. The artist’s skilful use of formal elements such as colour, shape and line enable us to make sense of this scene despite the elimination of all realistic details. The way in which the artist has applied the layers of paint has created textured impasto, adding further depth to the composition.

This oil painting is housed in its original gilt frame which complements it wonderfully. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A fantastic modernist style portrait, painted in oil and dated 1964.

A nude figure is depicted standing on a muted pink platform and against a calming blue background. With her gaze slightly turned, she is back-facing the viewer and caught unaware.

The artist demonstrates a great aptitude for painting the female body, as he skillfully captures the curves and angles of the figure.

He has also used artistic techniques of shading and shadowing. These not only add the illusion of depth and three-dimensionality to the painting, but to direct our eyes as the viewer to the focal point of the work.

  • Pensive Nude

    £695

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking and emotive large mid 20th century modernist style nude portrait, executed in oil on canvas.

A seated nude is depicted against a wonderfully painted backdrop. With her head resting on her hand, she is in a pensive pose, deep in thought.

At first glance, this semi-abstracted depiction of the nude figure may seem simple, but as we spend time to look at the colours and brushstrokes, we soon realise its complexity.

Using a wide array of colours including darker pastel shades and nude tones, the artist displays an excellent understanding of colour theory as layers and pairs of contrasting shades sit beside and on top of one another, blending together effortlessly and harmoniously.

The painting is composed with swatches of colours, each brushstroke executed back and forth with so much vigour and zest, almost a projection of the artist’s or the nude’s inner emotional state.

This oil on canvas sits in a beautiful gilt frame with an inner dark wood window as well as linen lining. The colours of the frame complement the painting extremely well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Knitting

    £350

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A beautiful and atmospheric mid century oil portrait , painted onto canvas. An elderly lady sits on a chair on a balcony, with a wicker basket by her feet, quietly knitting away. The artist has used a calm, soft colour palette to create this tranquil picture, and distinct and broad brushstrokes give it depth and texture. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on form, line, shape and colour.

This oil on board is housed in its original cream and silver frame with an inner fabric lined border, which suits this painting perfectly and really brings out its palette. The painting has an area of craquelure to the top right section, but overall the paint layer is stable. Cracks forming within the paint layer is natural as the paint starts to age. Craquelure is not in itself harmful to the painting, and can add to the ‘quality’ of patina that only age can bring. Overall it is in good condition. There is a small loss to the upper left corner of the frame (as shown in photos) but again this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the painting.

  • Nude Study

    £370

    Available

A large, richly coloured mid century nude study oil, painted in 1949.  There is a palpable sense of ‘ease’ to the nude figure, who sits relaxed in her chair – her face and body are relaxed, with no ounce of stiffness present. Her surroundings too are homely and warm – a flower pot sits by the window with the curtain drawn open, letting the natural light in.

The artist has painted skilfully and confidently, using a rich, saturated colour palette to paint this expressive study, and has included areas of impasto (where the painted thickly such that it stands proud from the surface)  to add texture and depth.

The painting is housed in its original mid century dark bronze wood frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • The Dream

    £345

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A bold and intriguing surrealist painting, executed in oil. Surrealism is an artistic movement that focuses on the exploration of the unconscious mind. This work heavily bears its elements, presenting a dream-like imagery of unexpected forms coming together. Apart from a mix of objects including a tomato, cup, and a moon floating around, we can spot an animal and a human form merging as one on the left, and a guitar and vase blending in on the right.

Although peculiar, this work of art is nevertheless fascinating and reminds us that strange beauty can be found in the unexpected.

The painting is housed in a complementary gilt frame which suits the painting well. The frame has minor scuffs and the painting is in good vintage condition overall.

An intriguing double sided oil on board:  one side depicts a pair of women looking into a book, and the other side features a striking single portrait of a woman.

The woman has an air of mystery about her, leaving us wondering what she might be thinking about.

    Off to School

    £225

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A lovely and endearing miniature oil on canvas depicting a scene of a pedestrian walkway on a fine summer’s day.

A woman in the foreground can be seen walking with her 2 children to drop them off at school. They are holding flowers in their hands, that they’ve picked along their journey.

Rich and saturated colours fill this energetic painting; and the short and textured brushstrokes imbue the work with a sense of liveliness and joy.

What’s special too is that the artist has uniquely enhanced the greenery portion by adding graphite detailing in a ‘scribbled’ manner, adding a sense of three-dimensionality to the trees.

The painting is housed in a white card mount, and a green stained wood frame with a blue and gold inner wood border. The colours of the frame pick up on the colours within the painting beautifully, making it stand out even more. The work is glazed (there is a layer of plexiglass between the frame and the painting) to ensure its longevity.

There is an innocence to the way the artist has painted the figures, capturing the youth of the figures.

  • Summer Walk

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A bright and very well executed mid century oil, painted in canvas.

We see a female figure en verso, her form reduced to a series of thin outlines in black. Wide and sweeping brushstrokes in pastel colours have been applied – vertical strokes for the figure, and horizontal strokes in the background. This seemingly simple composition has in fact been very skilfully executed, with the contrasting shades of non realistic colour creating depth and a sense of space, light and shadow.
