  • Portrait in Sepia

    £520

    Available

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A large and striking mid century modernist portrait in oil, painted onto board.

With a very distinctive dark sepia tone overall, the rusty reds of this portrait give it great impact. The figure’s gaze, although forward, does not look directly at us. Expressive, gestural brushstrokes can be seen throughout the surface, and layers of interesting colours reveal themselves slowly as we take the time to study the picture. Behind the figure appear several more heads, so we get a sense that she is perhaps standing amongst a crowd, but the artist has chosen her specifically as the protagonist of the painting.

This oil on board is housed in original mid century gilt frame with linen border. The painting and frame are both in excellent vintage condition.

  • Le Club 55

    £390

    Available

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A fun and unique mid century oil painting on canvas, titled ‘Le Club 55’ on reverse.

Le Club 55 is a legendary and glamorous beach club in the south of France, and we can infer that the setting of the painting is within its interior. Punctuating the center of the composition are two well-dressed figures standing in front of white round table, with 2 wine glasses in front of them. The background of the painting is composed of an interesting mix of collage including wine labels and an image of a sail boat.

Containing elements of geometric abstraction, the artist has skilfully reconstructed the figures down to flat blocks of contrasting colours to demonstrate their three-dimensional form, whilst simultaneously emphasising the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas.

This oil on stretched canvas comes unframed, but can be hung as is. It is in excellent vintage condition.

    Double Sided Portrait I

    £165

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An intriguing double sided oil on board:  one side depicts a pair of women looking into a book, and the other side features a striking single portrait of a woman.

The painting of the two ladies with the book is very textured, with multi directional and distinct brushstrokes creating a very dynamic and layered image. On the other side, the portrait of the woman is smoother in texture overall, but still has a very three dimensional effect. The woman has an air of mystery about her, leaving us wondering what she might be thinking about.

Painted onto board, both paintings are in very good vintage condition and can be displayed on either side. There is some slight paint loss to the very edges of the board but certainly does not detract from the overall charm of either picture. It could be displayed in its current state on an easel or leant against a shelf. Off to School

    £225

    Available

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A lovely and endearing miniature oil on canvas depicting a scene of a pedestrian walkway on a fine summer’s day.

A woman in the foreground can be seen walking with her 2 children to drop them off at school. They are holding flowers in their hands, that they’ve picked along their journey.

Rich and saturated colours fill this energetic painting; and the short and textured brushstrokes imbue the work with a sense of liveliness and joy.

What’s special too is that the artist has uniquely enhanced the greenery portion by adding graphite detailing in a ‘scribbled’ manner, adding a sense of three-dimensionality to the trees.

The painting is housed in a white card mount, and a green stained wood frame with a blue and gold inner wood border. The colours of the frame pick up on the colours within the painting beautifully, making it stand out even more. The work is glazed (there is a layer of plexiglass between the frame and the painting) to ensure its longevity.

Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Patched

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very striking mid century modernist abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas around the 1960s.

The painting is full of textural detail, as the artist has added an aggregate to certain areas (possibly sand or bitumen), creating a gritty and three dimensional effect in those areas. In other areas, large swathes of smooth creamy paint have been applied, in a restricted colour palette. The artist has worked in deep, rich tones and has used a myriad of curved forms to create the composition. There appears to be two figures, with one perhaps embracing another. However, the artist has chosen to focus on the formal elements of the picture such as shape, form and line, resulting in this largely abstract picture.

This oil on canvas  is presented in a very well suited gilt frame. The painting has some light craquelure to the areas of impasto but the paint layer is very stable as shown in the close photos. It is in very good vintage condition overall.

    Size: 82 x 71cm (including frame)

Set against a backdrop of blocks of dark blue and charcoal grey, the figure emerges and her naturalistic tones accentuate her presence and create a striking contrast against the somber backdrop.

The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, and there is a strong focus on rich colours and expressive brushstrokes to enhance the emotional resonance of the painting.

The brushstrokes, textured and expressive, imbue the composition with a tactile quality and adds character to the piece overall.

This oil on canvas is housed in a stunning champagne frame. The painting has scattered craquelure present commensurate with its age, but the paint layer is stable overall.

A thoughtful and expressive modernist style portrait, executed in oil onto canvas.

The artwork depicts a side profile view of a young figure dressed in blue clothing, and standing beside a lamp. The lamp is glowing with warm orange light, resulting in the figure’s hair and small parts of his silhouette to have an orange gleam as well.

Set against a light beige background, the artist has used a range of luminous colours including orange, purple, blue and green, and displays effective painterly skills in the medium of oil. Beautifully distinct and expressive brushstrokes fill the canvas, creating a vibrant and almost translucent and diaphanous effect that resembles the nature of watercolour.

This oil on canvas is housed in a white wooden frame with gilt and linen details. The painting has some minor scuffs, but overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

    Size: 71 x 61 cm (including frame)
