  • Great White Shark at Sea

    Great White Shark at Sea

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking naïve style contemporary painting of a dramatic maritime scene, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The painting depicts a monumental shark gliding through calm, cerulean waters while, above the surface, a tall-masted sailing ship drifts serenely under a rose-tinted sky.

Executed in a contemporary naïve style, the work embraces flat perspective and bold simplification. Forms are clearly outlined, proportions intentionally exaggerated for emphasis, and spatial depth is suggested through horizontal bands of colour rather than traditional modelling. The shark’s commanding scale is dramatically larger than the distant ship, enhancing the dreamlike, storytelling quality of the piece, lending it a subtly surreal charm.

The colour palette is both playful and harmonious. Layers of blue shift from deeper tones below to lighter hues near the surface, while the sky transitions through warm blush and coral pinks. The dark charcoal body of the shark anchors the composition, contrasted by its pale underbelly and small accents of red in the mouth. The restrained palette heightens visual clarity and impact.

Brushstrokes are smooth and controlled, with areas of flat, even application that emphasise shape over texture. Subtle tonal variations within the water suggest gentle movement, while the sky’s gradient appears softly blended. The overall finish is clean and deliberate, reinforcing the naïve aesthetic while maintaining a confident contemporary edge.

This oil on board is housed in a brown painted wood frame with an inner gilt window. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Humpback Whale at Sea

    Humpback Whale at Sea

    Sold

    SOLD

A bold and theatrical contemporary naïve style painting that depicts a monumental humpback whale gliding beneath the legendary ocean liner Lusitania, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The composition is split horizontally between sea and sky: above the waterline, the iconic steamship moves calmly across a pale grey horizon, its three red funnels releasing soft plumes of smoke; below, a vast humpback whale dominates the scene, its immense body rendered in simplified, graphic form.

Executed in a distinctive naïve style, the work embraces flattened perspective and exaggerated scale. The whale appears far larger than the ship, heightening the sense of quiet tension and lending the painting a folkloric, almost mythic quality. Detail is intentionally minimal: forms are cleanly outlined, shadows reduced, and spatial depth suggested through gentle tonal shifts rather than realism.

The palette is restrained and harmonious. Cool blues define the water, transitioning subtly from lighter tones near the surface to deeper shades around the whale’s body. The whale itself is painted in rich navy with a creamy white underbelly marked by rhythmic linear grooves. Above, the ship’s black hull, red funnels and white superstructure introduce strong contrast against the soft grey sky.

Brushwork is smooth and controlled, with flat, even applications of paint that emphasise shape and silhouette. The water shows delicate horizontal strokes, adding quiet movement while preserving the composition’s calm clarity.

This oil on board is presented in an ornate gilt frame, its elaborate carving and warm gold tones intentionally echoing the grandeur of the Lusitania. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Lesser Spotted Dogfish

    Lesser Spotted Dogfish

    Sold

    SOLD

A visually engaging contemporary naïve style painting depicting two Lesser Spotted Dogfish gliding in quiet formation beneath gently rippling waters, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

Set against a softly modulated blue sea, the pair move horizontally across the composition, their elongated bodies and distinctive spotted markings rendered with clarity and playful precision.

Executed in a naïve style, the work embraces simplified form and flattened perspective. The fish are presented in profile, their proportions slightly stylised to emphasise pattern and silhouette over anatomical realism. The repetition of the two figures creates a pleasing sense of rhythm and balance, lending the composition a calm, almost decorative quality.

The palette is harmonious and restrained. The cool blue water is built from subtle tonal variations, with light, horizontal strokes suggesting surface movement. In contrast, the dogfish are painted in warm sandy tones, scattered with rhythmic brown spots that animate their forms. Fine linear details define the fins and gill markings, adding gentle texture without disrupting the painting’s graphic simplicity.

Brushwork is smooth and controlled, with flat, even applications of paint enhancing the bold outlines and clean silhouettes. Delicate, feathered strokes in the background provide atmosphere while allowing the spotted patterning to remain the focal point.

This oil on board is presented in a dark wooden frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

A charming and whimsical naïve style contemporary painting of a maritime scene, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

A white beluga whale glides through rich blue waters, while above the horizon a tall sailing ship drifts beneath a soft pink sky dotted with small clouds.

Executed in a contemporary naïve style, the painting embraces clarity over realism. Perspective is intentionally flattened, proportions are stylised, and forms are reduced to their essential shapes. This simplicity enhances its whimsical, almost folkloric quality. The composition is clean and balanced, with strong horizontal divisions that give the work a calm, meditative rhythm.

The palette is bold yet harmonious: deep blues contrast beautifully with the warm rose-pink sky, while the pale whale stands out as the focal point. Brushwork appears smooth and controlled, with areas of flat, opaque colour that emphasise the graphic quality of the composition.

  • Orca and Steamship

    Orca and Steamship

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking naïve style contemporary painting that captures a moment of quiet drama at sea, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

A monumental orca glides across softly undulating waters, its bold black-and-white form commanding the foreground. Behind it, a stylised steamship sails calmly across the horizon, smoke rising in gentle puffs toward a pale, clouded sky. In the distance, faint mountainous silhouettes dissolve into mist, creating a sense of depth while maintaining the painting’s charming simplicity.

Executed in a naïve style, the work embraces flat perspective and deliberate scale distortion.  The whale is rendered larger than life in relation to the ship, lending the scene a dreamlike, storytelling quality. The composition feels almost folkloric, as if suspended between reality and imagination.

The palette is restrained yet effective: cool blues dominate the sea and sky, layered in soft tonal shifts, while the orca’s deep matte black contrasts crisply against its creamy white markings. The ship introduces earthy browns, subtly grounding the scene.

Brushwork is controlled and minimal, with smooth, even application across the whale’s body and ship, enhancing their graphic clarity. The water and sky show slightly more texture, with gentle horizontal strokes suggesting movement and atmosphere without disrupting the overall calm. The result is a piece that feels both playful and contemplative: bold in silhouette, serene in mood.

  • Difficult Tableau

    Difficult Tableau

    Sold

    SOLD

A small and visually impactful abstract composition in oil, painted by British artist Lloyd Durling,

This painting showcases Durling’s distinctive abstract vocabulary—tactile, spatially quiet, and emotionally charged through texture and colour. It feels like a visual diary entry composed of silences punctuated by vivid moments.

Durling introduces small blocks of intense, saturated colours including jet black, fiery orange, acidic yellow, and forest green, scattered throughout the pale background like thoughts breaking through quietude. Thick, painterly textures dominate the surface. The paint is almost sculpted, making the canvas a physical object as much as a visual one. This adds emotional depth—you sense that each mark carries intention and presence.

This impasto painting is mounted a dark stained oak frame. The dark wooden frame again complements the painting beautifully—earthy and solid, grounding the delicate and expressive content within.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

Lloyd is based in London and his practice is painting-based. His first international solo show was in 2010 at Golden in Chicago and he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, Asia and the US. In 2017 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Lloyd’s works are held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Whitworth Art Gallery and Museum, Progressive collection, America and Nomura Bank, Japan.

    Things Far and Near

    £350

    Available

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A small and visually impactful abstract composition in oil, painted by British artist Lloyd Durling,

This painting showcases Durling’s hallmark abstract language—minimal yet emotionally charged, textured yet airy. It’s a small piece that feels quiet but confident, introspective and balanced, like a private rhythm unfolding in colour and texture.

As with much of Durling’s work, the surface is highly textured, with thick layers of paint that create a tactile, almost geological quality. The canvas feels worked, scraped, and layered, like time embedded in paint.

The background is dominated by a soft minty green and pale pink base, giving the work a calm and gentle tone. Accents of bold black, vibrant orange-red, buttery yellow, and bright white interrupt the softness in bursts.

Despite its abstraction, this piece feels personal and evocative. There’s a delicate tension between order and spontaneity, between soft space and strong marks.

This impasto painting is mounted a dark stained oak frame. The dark wooden frame is a perfect match for this kind of subtle abstraction. It provides a visual anchor without stealing any attention, and its rustic quality echoes the organic textures in the painting itself.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

A contemporary painting that presents a whimsical depiction of a sloth suspended upside down from a gently curving tree branch , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The composition is pared back, allowing the single figure to become both the focal point and the emotional anchor of the work. Sparse foliage punctuates the scene, floating around the sloth like pauses in thought, reinforcing a sense of stillness and calm.

The style is deliberately simplified, with a subtle nod to folk art and modern naïve painting. Flattened forms and soft contours give the subject an emblematic rather than literal presence, while the sloth’s rounded body and elongated limbs create a gentle rhythm across the board, anchored by the horizontal branch.

A restrained, soothing palette of warm brown and taupe contrasts with a muted blue-grey background, accented by soft green leaves. Smooth, matte brushstrokes and a lightly textured surface enhance the contemplative mood of the piece.

    Sold

    SOLD

A very unique original artwork by British artist Dave Boyd, constructed from discarded books (repurposed cloth covers, papers, cardboard, binding boards) mounted on a wooden panel in a solid wood float frame.

Centred in the upper half is a soft pinkish-orange circle, and in the lower half, a deep maroon or burgundy circle, both crisply defined but softly textured. The background is a heavily textured rust-brown surface, almost like oxidized metal or aged earth. It’s speckled with natural-looking marks, scuffs, and tonal variation, creating a sense of history and  suggesting time, wear, and process.

The artwork is presented in wood frame that suits it very well. It has been constructed with professional grade adhesive and is shipped with robust fixings, ready to hang, Both artwork and frame are in excellent condition.

Dave’s artistic practice focuses on the juxtaposition between the manmade and the natural and the human experience of geometric forms, surfaces and materials. Paintings and collages often embody a built or constructed aesthetic and are strongly influenced by architecture and the built environment, with the aim of suggesting visual encounters with structures and landscapes. Utilising and repurposing materials,  with a focus on minimal composition, surface and colour, Dave’s work seek to utilise the subtle marks inherent in objects that have been used and handled over many years.
