A Place Beyond Reach I

A charming little abstract landscape by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, inspired by the rolling countryside and familiar views of Wiltshire, Bath and Bristol.

Rather than depicting one particular place, Frances draws on memories of different hillside vistas, bringing them together to create a landscape that feels wonderfully familiar yet entirely imagined. Earthy greens, soft blues, warm ochres and touches of deep brown sit comfortably alongside one another, while loose, expressive brushstrokes suggest undulating hills, distant fields and scattered tree forms.

There’s a lovely simplicity to this painting, with just enough detail to give us a sense of place without being too literal. The textured surface and layered colours add depth and interest, inviting us to linger over the little details. It’s the sort of landscape that might remind you of somewhere you’ve been, even if you can’t quite put your finger on where.

Beautifully presented in a generous white St Ives-style frame, which gives this small painting a wonderful sense of presence. A lovely piece for anyone who appreciates the quieter beauty of the British countryside.
