    Bristol-based artist Brendan Lancaster finds interest in the most ordinary of subjects. In his Knives and Forks series, familiar pieces of cutlery become an exploration of composition, colour and the relationships between objects. Lancaster carefully arranges pieces collected from home and second-hand shops, experimenting with the way they point towards or away from one another and the shapes created in the spaces between them. Despite their simplicity, these small arrangements have a surprising sense of drama — a knife leaning towards a fork can suddenly feel like two characters in conversation.

    Colour is equally important. Lancaster works within a beautifully restrained range of earthy browns, creams and neutrals, paying particular attention to tiny shifts between warmer and cooler tones and to what he calls the “edge” of colour — the point where one colour meets another. Rather than creating hard, precise boundaries, he layers and reworks the paint to produce softer edges, an effect enhanced in several works by the wonderfully tactile surface of hessian. The small scale is deliberate too: these are paintings intended to draw you in rather than shout for attention, leaving enough space around the objects for the viewer to slow down, notice the light and colour, and find something unexpectedly contemplative in the everyday.

    This painted has been executed in oil onto hessian canvas, and is beautifully presented in a dark wood veneer tray frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
