A quaint and homely mid century modernist landscape composition, painted in oil onto board and dated 1943 on the reverse, by Swedish artist Kurt Lindon (1910-1985), whose works can be found in the collections at the  Stockholm City Museum, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Linköping Museum, Östersund Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, and the Borås Art Museum.

In this scene we see two figures tending to a bush, with houses and garden sheds in the background. The artist has applied the paint thickly, creating areas of impasto and a lovely texturing across the board. Elements of a pointillist technique have been used, where tiny dots of colour in short brushstrokes have been placed in close proximity to one another, which when viewed at a distance, appear to fuse together. As a result, these painting is interesting both from near and afar – the overall colour palette is warm and rich, and the subject is quaint and charming. But when viewed in close proximity, the detail on each brushstroke is fascinating.

This oil on board is housed in a well-suited cream frame with an inner and outer gilt window.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has a small loss at its right corner.

The artist’s expressive brushstrokes create a sense of movement, capturing the quirkiness of the fruit.

With the use of a rich colour palette, the overall composition feels warm and inviting,

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has very tiny dots of paint loss to its left side, as shown in close ups, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. The frame has scuffs and marks to its corners.

  • Yellow & Green Ball

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 on the reverse by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the green and yellow circles, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This painting is wonderfully presented in a distressed style frame with ridge detail, and an inner linen-lined border and gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Patched

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very striking mid century modernist abstract composition in oil, painted onto canvas around the 1960s.

The painting is full of textural detail, as the artist has added an aggregate to certain areas (possibly sand or bitumen), creating a gritty and three dimensional effect in those areas. In other areas, large swathes of smooth creamy paint have been applied, in a restricted colour palette. The artist has worked in deep, rich tones and has used a myriad of curved forms to create the composition. There appears to be two figures, with one perhaps embracing another. However, the artist has chosen to focus on the formal elements of the picture such as shape, form and line, resulting in this largely abstract picture.

This oil on canvas  is presented in a very well suited gilt frame. The painting has some light craquelure to the areas of impasto but the paint layer is very stable as shown in the close photos. It is in very good vintage condition overall.

    Size: 82 x 71cm (including frame)

Semi-abstract in nature, all realistic details have been omitted and there is a strong focus on expressive brushstrokes and colour.

Swift, expressive brushstrokes infuse the scene with energy, capturing the essence of the landscape in a captivatingly semi-abstract manner.

This oil on canvas is housed in a well-suited wood frame with an inner canvas lining. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.
