A wonderfully quirky and expressive sculpture by contemporary British artist Shirley Sharp, featuring a characterful face with exaggerated features and a rather intriguing expression.

With its oversized nose, gently curved mouth and wonderfully asymmetrical features, Headspace has a personality all of its own. One eye appears softly closed while the other is a deep, hollow opening, giving the face an almost dreamlike quality. There’s something both humorous and slightly mysterious about this character. Is it smiling contentedly, lost in thought, or simply enjoying a moment in its own little world?

The sculpture’s beautifully rugged surface is full of texture and character. Soft creams, warm ochres, muted greens and touches of dusty pink give it an earthy, weathered appearance, while the visible marks and irregularities make it feel wonderfully handmade.

Shirley’s sculptures explore human behaviour, emotions and the curious ways we connect with one another. Inspired by years of sketching people in everyday settings, she deliberately exaggerates features and embraces rough, textured surfaces to give her characters a sense of having lived a life. Her figures often balance humour with tenderness and vulnerability, inviting us to recognise a little of ourselves in them.

What we particularly love about Headspace is that its expression seems to change the longer you look at it. There’s no obvious story or emotion being presented, leaving plenty of room for your own interpretation.

A wonderfully unusual and endearing piece that would bring personality, warmth and a little humour to a shelf, sideboard or favourite corner of the home.
