  • Portrait in Yellow

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and brilliantly executed modernist figurative oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The painting depicts a silhouette of a female figure in yellow clothing, set against a light coloured background.

The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.

Large swathes of rich and vivid colours have been applied to the canvas, creating areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. The artist has also wonderfully layered contrasting colours to reveal  great depth within this striking painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a silver frame with linen border. There is some light craquelure to the lower half of the painting, and an area of paint loss along the lower section, as shown in the close ups. However this paint loss is fairly inconspicuous due to the colour blocking style of the piece.  The frame and inner border have some general age wear and marks.

  • Swinging Acrobats

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very striking mid century composition of two acrobats swinging in action, executed in watercolour onto paper.

Drawing on a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has skilfully reduced this composition down into shapes and lines using contrasting colour blocks.

The figures, depicted long and slender with black outlines to highlight their form, are set against a well-coloured background comprising darker shades of teal, pink and grey. Bold and deliberate brushstrokes have been confidently executed, capturing the energy and dynamism of the swinging acrobats.

This watercolour on paper is housed in a gilt frame with a mount card, and is glazed (there is a layer of glass between the frame and the painting to ensure its longevity). The mount card has very minor age toning present, and otherwise, the painting and frame are in good condition overall. Please note that there is some glare evident in the photographs due to the layer of glass.

    Sold

    SOLD.

A modernist oil on canvas depicting a family on a walk, painted in 1980.

  • The Crowd

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and confidently executed mid century semi abstract modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas.

In this scene we see four main figures amongst a blur of people – the artist has left out realistic details, and focused instead on colour, form and texture. Broad, gestural brushstrokes in non representational colours fill the canvas, creating this expressionist composition. There is a distinct sense of movement in the background, with the 4 figures standing out within it, almost as if it could be a recollection of a memory or dream.

The surface is heavily textured, with areas of heavy impasto where the paint has been very thickly applied.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame, with an inner linen lined border. There is some minor craquelure to the painting (as shown in close ups), due to the thickness of the paint. But the paint layer is stable overall. There is some minor scuffing to the frame. Neither of these signs of ageing detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

  • Expecting

    Sold

A rather charming mid century modernist portrait composition in oil.

Here the artist has paid full attention to the sitter – an expectant mother. The painting has a timeless quality to it – we are not given any context of place or time. Yet the paradox here is that we know this is capturing a very particular moment in time and a very particular scenario that is relatable to many. The artist has not included the sitter’s facial details, choosing instead to focus on her form, and the way the light hits her body and her dress.

This beautifully sentimental painting has a quiet strength to it, capturing a very special moment in time. It is housed in a lovely gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some areas which have been painted over, as seen in the close up photos.
