A large and very striking mid century modernist portrait composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1955 by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.

This painting is a stylized and abstracted portrait of a seated woman in a minimalist, geometric interior. The composition emphasizes form, structure, and contrast, blending figurative and abstract elements.

The central figure is a girl with angular features, seated at a table with a few simplified objects in front of her. Her hair is short and dark, framing her face. She wears a yellow dress with bold, blocky shapes, adding a pop of colour against the muted background.

The room is divided into sharp geometric shapes, with black, grey, and white tones creating a stark, cubist-like interior. Bold, thick black outlines define the figure and objects, contributing to the graphic quality of the painting. The colours are minimal, dominated by shades of black, grey, white, and beige. The yellow of the girl’s dress provides the only vibrant colour, drawing attention to her figure.

The style is modernist with cubist and expressionist influences, focusing on abstraction and simplicity. Brushwork is flat and controlled, with an emphasis on bold lines and colour blocks over fine details. The deliberate simplicity and sharp contrasts focus attention on the female figure as the emotional and structural centrepiece of the artwork.

The artwork is presented in a simple, light wooden frame, complementing the painting’s minimalist aesthetic. There is a very tiny spot of paint loss along the right side of the painting, as shown in close up, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. There is some general wear to the vintage frame. commensurate with age.
