  • Nude Study

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large, richly coloured mid century nude study oil, painted in 1949.  There is a palpable sense of ‘ease’ to the nude figure, who sits relaxed in her chair – her face and body are relaxed, with no ounce of stiffness present. Her surroundings too are homely and warm – a flower pot sits by the window with the curtain drawn open, letting the natural light in.

The artist has painted skilfully and confidently, using a rich, saturated colour palette to paint this expressive study, and has included areas of impasto (where the painted thickly such that it stands proud from the surface)  to add texture and depth.

The painting is housed in its original mid century dark bronze wood frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

    SOLD.

A playful and striking composition presenting 2 figures in a coloured backdrop, brilliantly executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1951.

Painted with a modernist ethos and containing elements of geometric abstraction, the artist has reconstructed the scene down to flat geometric shapes in contrasting colours to demonstrate a sense of depth, as well as bold outlines to highlight and emphasise form.

    Sold

    SOLD.

An outstanding geometric abstract mid-century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The painting presents a central figure, and it embodies the essence of a modernist aesthetic with its unique approach to depicting the human form.

Employing elements of geometric abstraction,  the artist has skilfully deconstructed the figure and the background, reducing it down into fragmented shapes. Although each block appears to be composed of a distinct hue, it is evident that the artist has layered contrasting colours in some of the blocks to reveal interest. The different shapes have been carefully juxtaposed against one another, creating a wonderful interplay of colours that heightens the visual impact of the composition, whilst inviting the viewer to contemplate the essence of the human form and the interplay between individual elements that comprise our identity.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim wood frame. Both the painting and frame have some very minor signs of ageing commensurate with age, and this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Seated Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very well executed mid century modernist portrait in oil, painted onto canvas.

A male figure in his workwear sits on stool, with his cap resting on his knee, and perhaps a box of cigarettes clasped in his hand, captured at a point where he is taking a break from work. With its solid patches of colour and clearly defined forms, this striking portrait contains elements of post-impressionism, with the artist seeking to express emotions rather than just simply optical impressions. The figure looks straight at us, but his expression is kind, and there is a sense of warmth and familiarity to him.

We can just about see the view outside the window – a series of geometrical shapes alluding to houses and buildings. These geometry of angles and contrasting angles continues throughout the picture, with definitive forms and lines building up the picture.

A very quaint and atmospheric lakeside composition, painted in oil onto canvas and dated 1939 on the reverse.

Broad, textural brushstrokes fill the canvas in an array of pastel colours, wonderfully capturing the effect of the sunlight on the lake landscape. There is a beautiful harmony and cohesiveness in the palette of this composition, with several colours repeating in various areas of the canvas.

This oil on canvas is housed a lovely nude painted distressed frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There appears to be an area of restoration to the sky area of the painting but this is only evident on the reverse – this restoration is not visible on the front. Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and emotive mid century portrait, executed in oil onto board.

The painting presents an interior setting, where a young female figure is sitting on a chair with her hands clasped together in front of her. Although the artist has intentionally chosen not to paint her facial details, there is sense of calm, and stillness. She sits quietly, comfortably, with a quality of timelessness.

The palette is soft and tender, perfectly suited to the mood of the sitter and the scene.  We know not who the figure is, but there is a palpable sense of familiarity. The painting emits a warm glow, with its shades of mellow yellow, green and orange capturing the mood and homeliness of the setting.

This painting is housed in a deep-profiled wood frame with visible grain. There are paint losses to the inner border of the frame as shown, but it matches the general look of the painting and frame. • Portrait of a Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure study in oil, painted on to canvas laid to board, and dated 1956.

Painted in a post impressionist manner, the artist has incorporated a highly personal use of colour and brushwork, directly expressing and capturing an emotional response. The male figure looks down, and not directly at us – the artist has captured him in a moment of thought and reflection. Using a minimal  yet very earthy palette of blues, browns and blacks, the artist has also chosen to focus on the angles of his hairline, facial features, coat and collar. The artist has also captured the way the light hits the figure brilliantly, creating this very well executed composition and showing off the artist’s mastery with his medium.

This oil painting is housed in a slim frame that complements the painting well. There is some wear to the edges of the painting, and to the frame which has some small losses as shown, but this is all in keeping with the overall style. • Red Shoes

    Sold

    SOLD.

A charming mid century portrait painted in oil onto board, depicted a seated figure of a young boy.

The artist has painted the figure in an expressionist style, using a very restrained palette and bold outlines to create the composition. This simple yet striking composition shows a young boy seated, reading a book. There is a particularly raw quality to this portrait – the artist has combined an earthy palette with broad and loose brushstrokes. There is a varied style to the application of paint, with some areas loose and thin, while others thicker and with layers of impasto. The artist appears to have painted the figure quickly and with vigour, yet it is clear that his expressive strokes remained controlled and intentional. Elements of the way this has been painted are reminiscent of the fluidity and expressiveness of the art of Chinese calligraphy.

This oil on board is framed in a double window gilt frame with a linen lined border. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

A large and brilliantly executed modernist figurative oil composition by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

Set against a richly coloured background, this affectionate composition depicts two figures standing closely beside each other, with the taller figure placing her hand around the shoulder of the shorter figure. The facial features of the figures have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has reconstructed this scene down to blocks of contrasting colours. Large swathes of richer and lighter shades have not only been thoughtfully been applied to the canvas, but also wonderfully layered to reveal a light texture and interest to the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 79 x 64 cm (including frame)
