This small yet powerful oil painting is housed in a very complementary gilt frame. There is a very small area of surface loss to the top edge of the painting, as shown in close ups, but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. Sold

    SOLD.

An exceptional and very striking mid century figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

  • Pensive Nude

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking and emotive large mid 20th century modernist style nude portrait, executed in oil on canvas.

A seated nude is depicted against a wonderfully painted backdrop. With her head resting on her hand, she is in a pensive pose, deep in thought.

At first glance, this semi-abstracted depiction of the nude figure may seem simple, but as we spend time to look at the colours and brushstrokes, we soon realise its complexity.

Using a wide array of colours including darker pastel shades and nude tones, the artist displays an excellent understanding of colour theory as layers and pairs of contrasting shades sit beside and on top of one another, blending together effortlessly and harmoniously.

The painting is composed with swatches of colours, each brushstroke executed back and forth with so much vigour and zest, almost a projection of the artist’s or the nude’s inner emotional state.

This oil on canvas sits in a beautiful gilt frame with an inner dark wood window as well as linen lining. The colours of the frame complement the painting extremely well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Dancer

    Sold

    SOLD.

A distinctly modernist oil portrait of an African female figure in tribal dress, painted in 1959.

Deep and rich planes of colours fill the canvas, with angular forms and distinct lines building up into a semi abstract portrait. We see the figure in side profile, arms and legs in the midst of movement.  The artist teases our eye – we are unable to discern where her dress and legs end, and where the background begins. Angled planes of white surrounding the figure illuminate her  upper body, skilfully narrowing our eyes towards the main figure, before then dispersing as the body and background become indistinguishable.

The surface of the painting has also been coated with a layer of varnish. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork. Do not that some glare is present in the photographs.

This oil on board is housed in a wood frame that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are areas of light craquelure across the painting commensurate with its age, but is in good vintage condition overall.

  • Cubist Figures

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very unique mid century portrait, painted in oil onto canvas.

Cubist in nature, the artist has taken an interesting perspective in the portrayal of two figures. Their forms have been flattened, and the painting has a strong focus on line, pattern, colour and angular shapes.

Through the use of distinct and repeated brushstrokes in one particular direction, the artist has used flat angular shapes to represent the different sides of the figures to suggest their three-dimensional structures.

Through the use of a monochromatic palette with unique hints of blue and brown, the tonal gradation from darker moody tones to lighter shades as well as the use of bold outlines also allows the figures to be more three dimensional.

This oil on canvas is housed in a light blue painted distressed frame that suits the painting wonderfully. There is some scattered craquelure present as shown but the paint layer is stable overall. There are minor scuffs to the frame which is in keeping with the style. Overall the painting and frame are both in very good vintage condition.

  • Imagine

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking and intriguing figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

In this fascinating composition, we can discern 2 masked figures surrounded by mountains. Due to its peculiar nature, the painting could resemble a dream-like imagery and contain elements of surrealism, which is an artistic movement that focuses on the exploration of the unconscious mind.

The focal colour is blue, with strong punctuations of orange and white. The artist displays his mastery in the medium of oil as he overlays colours, resulting in almost silkscreen-like print effect.

This oil on canvas is housed in a slim silver frame. There is a small loss to the lower left corner of the frame, but this isn’t visible from the front. Overall, both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

An emotionally charged and striking mid century figurative street scene painting, executed in oil onto board.

Post-impressionist in style, there is a strong emphasis on bold colours and distinctive brushstrokes. These elements wonderfully covey the emotions of love and happiness of the couple whom presumably just got married.

The artist has used a vivid and non-naturalistic colour palette including shades of blue, orange and green that imbue the painting with a liveliness, and the swift and bold brushstrokes add a dynamic touch and an expressive effect in the painting. .

A poignant and very impressive mid century modernist oil portrait, painted on to canvas and dated 1962.

A female figure sits against the light, on what appears to be a balcony. The artist has skilfully used the sitter’s position and the effect of shadows to his advantage, capturing the silhouette like quality of the figure as a result of the position of the light. An aura appears around her, optically separating her from her surroundings and creating a very striking effect. Deep and vivid colours of dark grey, jewel green and midnight blue contrast beautifully against the light area behind the figure. Despite the use of darker colours, there is a luminous quality to the painting which is testament to the artist’s skill.
