Tender Embrace

An endearing mid-century modernist figurative oil composition by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

Semi-abstract in nature, the painting captures an intimate moment between two figures, likely a mother and child, rendered in a modernist style with expressive brushwork. The composition is defined by bold yet softened forms, with facial features left undefined, enhancing the emotional depth of the scene.

The artist has used a rich palette dominated by cool tones—shades of teal, blue, and green—contrasted by earthy black and brown, with vibrant accents of orange and yellow adding warmth and dynamism. The brushstrokes are thick and gestural, using impasto techniques to create texture and movement, giving the painting a tactile, almost sculptural quality.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
