A large and striking mid-century modernist painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition presents a charming street scene at Patmos in Greece. In the foreground, two priests in black robes first draw our attention. In the background of the painting, a figure and a donkey can be seen strolling on a pathway lined with white buildings with colourful arches.

Painted in a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has flattened the respective forms, reducing them down to blocks of contrasting shades to demonstrate depth and a sense of space to the painting.

A spectrum of uplifting colours have been used, and the brushstrokes are gentle, evoking a soothing and relaxing quality to the painting.

Furthermore, by leaving areas of the canvas exposed, the artist’s creative use of negative space accentuates the shapes of the figure and objects, drawing our attention to their distinct form.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slim gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
