Setting the Table

A large and charming mid century modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1945.
In this scene we see two figures within a home setting, where a mother and a child approach a dining table with two plates visible. The artist has intentionally chosen to leave out any facial details, focusing in stead on the formal elements of the scene such as shape, line and colour. The palette is warm and earthy, largely comprising the rich tones of brown and green.
This large oil on canvas is housed in a beautiful distressed wood frame. The painting has some scattered craquelure present but paint layer is stable overall. There is a small area of paint loss at the central area, as shown in close up.
