Sunlit Town Square

SOLD

A charming composition of an everyday scene at a town square, painted in oil onto board and dated 1935 by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.

The painting captures a bustling scene in a town square. Vendors are selling fresh produce, and people are gathering around. The focal point of the composition is a grand stone monument topped with a standing statue, which serves as an anchor amidst the lively marketplace. The background features warm-hued buildings.

The painting showcases a warm and earthy palette, and the sunlit square is bathed in soft golden hues.

The artist’s brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the fleeting essence of light and movement. Short, deliberate strokes define the figures and architectural elements, while broader, more fluid applications of paint create atmospheric depth.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a small area of paint loss at its lower left corner.
