A striking and confidently executed mid-century modernist style street scene composition, painted in oil onto board and dated 1955.

The painting presents a figure in the distance,  walking through a narrow street scene lined with houses and trees, and under a moody grey sky.

Modernist in its ethos, the composition has a structured feel as the artist has skilfully simplified and deconstructed the scene down to bold, angular shapes in contrasting colour.

The palette is muted and subdued, with earthy greens and browns, and dark grey , contrasting  with white and punches of orange. This interplay of colours demonstrates depth to the painting.

The brushstrokes are confident,  expressive and deliberate – giving the work an energetic, almost rhythmic quality.

This oil on board is housed in a very well-suited grey-painted wood frame with an inner white-painted border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor scuffs.
