A bold and uplifting  mid-century modernist painting of a cityscape, executed in oil onto board and dated 1940 in a handwritten letter attached to the reverse.

The composition features an urban setting of Stockholm in Sweden. In the foreground, we can spot a figure holding balloons and other pedestrians on a walkway. Beyond them lies an abstracted view of a bridge that leads to the city.

The painting is rendered in a loose, impressionistic style, characterised by visible, expressive brushstrokes. The style suggests spontaneity and vibrancy, emphasising the mood and atmosphere of the scene over intricate detail. The brushstrokes are textured and swift, adding character to the composition.

The artist has used a warm and harmonious palette dominated by a spectrum of rich shades including yellows and browns, and complemented by cooler tones of blue and green. The warm yellows of the sky suggest a sunset or sunrise, imbuing the work with an uplifting quality.

This oil on board is housed in a ridged gilt frame that is very solid. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
