Normandy Harbour

A large, lively and energetic harbour scene composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1953 by Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum, the Swedish Modern Museum, and also in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The painting captures the vibrant charm of Honfleur, a historic port town in Normandy, France. The composition depicts a lively harbour scene with a stylised green boat in the foreground, a fortified structure with red-roofed towers, and a collection of white buildings lining the coastline. Figures dressed in white stroll along the streets, and a bold tree frames the right side of the image, providing contrast to the cool blues of the sky and water.

Containing elements of fauvism and expressionism, this striking painting emphasises rich colours, decorative pattern, and a flattened perspective.

A palette of rich earth tones and cool blues defines the scene. The sky and water are rendered in a bright turquoise, creating a sense of depth, while the brown hues of the foreground add warmth. The bold use of red in the rooftops and small accents throughout the piece adds a dynamic contrast.
