The artist intentionally leaves areas of the canvas showing through and makes his brushstrokes visible, reminding us that this portrait is one created out of formal elements of shape and colour painted on a two dimensional surface, as opposed to an imitation of reality.     Large swathes of bold and vivid colour have been unabashedly applied to the canvas, and the artist has also incorporated areas of thick impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface, creating a three dimensional effect. The artist’s painterly style celebrates the medium of oil, encouraging our eyes to soak in his rich and vivid palette.

    This impressionist oil captures the misty, foggy feel of the landscape after a heavy storm. Reminiscent of later works by the impressionist artist JMW Turner, this artwork too dispenses the use of hard outlines and any artificial divisions of the visual field that we see in more traditional approaches of realistic painting. Instead, greater prominence is given to the effects of light and atmosphere.   • The Barge

    A very large mid century oil painting on canvas depicting a narrow boat and a rowing boat on a river in winter.

    There is a beautiful quietness to this scene – it captures the essence of  a cold, crisp winter morning.  The water is perfectly still, and quite possibly icy. We see the crisp reflection of the blue rowing boat in the water. Soft, white snow covers the banks of the river. A black barge is docked on the left side, with a blue rowing boat sitting quietly beside it, its tether hidden by the water.

    The artist has been brave in his painting approach and has not shied away from painting a large proportion of the composition (i.e. the river) in a dark colour. But this does not depress the mood of the painting. Rather, it skilfully directs our eyes’ journey. We are initially drawn to the dark river, where the paint is smooth and untextured, but our eyes are then directed up the river and towards the upper half of the picture, where we see the snow and sky. This area of the painting has been painted very differently – with areas of textured impasto and more movement (in contrast to the very still, smooth river). These differing painting techniques give it its unique character, and add depth and interest to the painting.

    The painting is housed in a wide profile frame that complements it perfectly. As shown in the photos, here are two small punctures to the left corner (where the black barge is) but this is not noticeable unless closely inspected.  There is a small loss to the middle section of the upper half (also shown in close up photo) but again this is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The colour palette of the painting hides these imperfections well. Please note that in close up of the river, there is some photographic glare due to dark palette. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

    A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

    Upon first glance, this landscape composition of 2 trees may appear simple to the eye. However as we take time to explore the painting further, one can notice its complexity and distinct exploration on geometric shapes, lines and colours.

    Using a restrained palette of varying shades of white, beige and orange, the artist has embraced the layering technique – applying colours over one another in a swift yet thoughtful manner to form this wonderfully textured composition as well as to demonstrate depth to the painting.

    A playful range of brushstrokes including dots, shorts dabs and thin vertical strokes have been used, adding liveliness and character to the piece.

    This oil on board  is housed in an outstanding grey and brown frame; and the colours of the frame pair perfectly with the painting as they thoroughly complement one another. There is a slight bowing and unevenness to the board.

    A spirited mid century semi abstract oil, painted onto canvas.

    Using a restrained palette, the artist has captured the ever changing nature of the coastal landscape and sky – broad, expressive brushstrokes capture the impression of its movement and its transience.

    We are able to discern a row of ships far into the distance, but these bend beautifully into the overall composition. There is a satisfying cohesiveness in the picture between the foreground, middle, and background – the coastal rocks, water, ships and sky unify through the brushwork and colour palette.

    The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which complements it wonderfully. The inner gilt window illuminates the panting and brings out its palette and tone.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a small mark to the top edge of the gilt section, as shown in the photos.
