Chartres in Evening Light
SOLD.
A small yet impactful landscape composition that evokes a serene atmosphere of Chartres in France, depicted at a distance under a soft, light yellow evening sky. Executed in oil onto board and dated 1975, the painting is by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The scene is characterised by its rich colour palette, as well as expressive brushstrokes, particularly evident in the dark greens and earth tones used to shape the landscape. The brushwork is loose yet deliberate, conveying the quiet beauty of the town, while the soft, yellow hues of the sky create a sense of calm and tranquility.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs and small losses to the corners, commensurate with age.
