  • Twilight

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and dramatic mid century coastal landscape composition, executed in oil in a semi-abstract manner.

Upon first glance, our eyes are drawn to the left side of the painting, where we see a house set within a rocky landscape. This crescendo in the composition then eases downwards as our eyes shift across the landscape towards to the right, where we then catch a glimpse of the sea and the horizon beyond. Our eyes are then carried upwards, towards the lighter but still very moody sky.

Expressive and painterly brushstrokes fill the canvas, and the artist has used a restrained palette, focusing our attention on the dramatic composition. There is something nostalgic and mysterious about the piece that we think really sets it apart.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century frame with very detailed borders that draw our eyes inwards towards the painting.

  • Evoke

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A wonderfully textured and expressive mid century abstract painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

This painting is powerful and visually striking in appearance, as it is composed with saturated and fiery colours comprising shades of orange, red and yellow that evoke energy and warmth.

The artist has skilfully used the impasto technique – applying thick layers of paint to provide a textural dimension to the artwork. This thick accumulation of paint that lends a three-dimensional quality not only adds character to the piece, but a sense of dynamism too.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original mid century hessian frame with an inner gilt window. There is some general wear to the hessian lining on the frame but this is only noticeable upon close inspection.

  • Harbour Boardwalk

    Sold

    SOLD.

A soothing semi-abstract mid century oil painting depicting a coastal harbour. The painting is well balanced with equal visual weight as boats sit on the left on the artwork, and 2 figures strolling on a connecting boardwalk are painted on the right.

The painting demonstrates great depth and width – brought forth by the long multi-directional brushstrokes that sweep across the painting gracefully, as well as through the use of contrasting lively colour that sit beside and layer upon one another beautifully.

This oil on board is housed in a very complementary robust grainy wood frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Looking On

    Sold

    SOLD.

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A very large and striking mid century oil on canvas, housed within a gorgeous wide profile wood frame.

Broad, loose brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and narrative elements are all features of this large composition.  There are several details to notice in this expressive painting  – an archipelago boat sails on the water, with a large white bird swooping towards it. A small figure in black stands to the lower central section, and to the right edge we see a the side profile of a larger figure, looking on towards the scene.

It seems that this is a memory of a scene that the artist has painted, rather than something that is taking place before him. The emotive style of brushwork and colour denotes an expression of feeling, rather than reality. The artist has gone beyond the depiction of external nature and has instead given form to an inner vision.

The raw, almost unfinished appearance, combined with the swirls of paint in rich colours bears influences of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, who was also known to paint subject matter which was symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which suits it perfectly. The frame shows off its wood grain beautifully, and is further enhanced by an inner gilt window. The painting is in good vintage condition, with some minor surface scuffs and marks typical for a piece of this age. The frame has some surface paint losses to the inner window.

  • Seated in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very well executed mid century oil portrait, painted onto canvas and framed in its original mid century frame.

A female figure in an azure blue dress sits on a bright yellow chair. All realistic details have been omitted, drawing our attention instead to painterly elements such as shape, form and colour. Some aspects of this painting are reminiscent of figurative works by Modgliani, such as the elongation of the figure. The artist lengthens her body, keeping her torso parallel with the back of the chair, which has also been elongated, drawing our eyes downwards and creating a lovely sense of rhythm, ease, and restfulness.  Behind the sitter we see a patchwork of colour, applied so effectively that it both harmonises and connects the picture, yet still allows the figure and chair to stand out. The combination of flattened space, underlying shapes and colour harmony make up this very well executed modernist portrait.

This oil on canvas is housed in its original mid century gilt wood frame which complements the painting brilliantly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Pairing

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century modernist portrait painting, executed in oil onto board.

Physically direct and emotionally charged, two vivid and richly coloured figures stare at us straight on, their faces elongated, demarcated by bold lines and angles.  The artist has kept his palette restrained, sticking to a range of contrasting tones of blue , black, orange and green. The way in which the faces have been composed are perhaps a nod to masks of tribal art, and therefore also to the same ‘primitive’ influences that interested modernist artists like Picasso and Gauguin.

The painting is housed in a frame lined with a linen border.  There is some general wear to the painting surface (commensurate with age) – scattered surface marks and spots. There is some age toning and marks to the frame, and an area of age toning along the left edge of the frame.

A saturated colour palette of blues, greens, reds, and browns make up this dynamic picture, where a row of old buildings set the backdrop for a river with boats.

The oil on canvas is housed in a thick wood frame which suits it very well, picking up beautifully on the colours within the painting. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Before the Rain

A mid century landscape motif painted in oil onto board, and framed in a very complementary light blue frame.

A pair of cows rest on the rural pasture, and behind them sit two farm sheds. To the sky, brushstrokes have been applied in a very expressive manner – swirls of blue draw attention to the cloudy skies. The cows lie on the grass , also an ‘old wives” indication that rain might soon arrive. To the bottom half of the picture, short, repetitive and distinct strokes mark out the field.

This wonderfully expressive and textured landscape is housed in a light blue frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Beyond the Willow

    Sold

    SOLD.

A really charming mid century landscape in oil, beautifully housed in a wide profile frame.

In this quaint landscape scene, we see a white farmhouse beyond a lake. The composition is surrounded by willow trees, creating a window-like effect into the scene.  The artist has executed this piece in a painterly style – loose, impressionist brushstrokes capture the effect of the movement of the willow and the water in the lake.

This lovely painting is housed in its original mid century wide profile wood and gilt frame. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition. There is a small surface abrasion to the left corner of the frame, as shown in photos.

  • City Frost

    Sold

A large and skilfully painted mid century oil on canvas, painted in 1955. This expressionist painting features a bold, rich and earthy palette, painted in thoroughly confident manner. In the forefront of the picture, dark green trees are sit amongst a snow covered ground, set against a backdrop of buildings. The harshness of the cold weather can almost be felt through the canvas, conveyed through the coarse and expressive brushwork in bold colours. The large size of the painting adds to the arresting and striking nature of this winter cityscape.

  • Yellow Beads

    Sold

    SOLD.

A stunning mid century portrait in oil, painted onto board in 1944.

The artist has focused on the formal elements in this portrait, using shape and colour to create this distinctly modernist picture. Flat shapes interlock perfectly to create the headwear, body and clothes of the female figure. The artist intentionally leaves areas of the canvas showing through and makes his brushstrokes visible, reminding us that this portrait is one created out of formal elements of shape and colour painted on a two dimensional surface, as opposed to an imitation of reality. The bright and saturated colours give this painting a wonderful air of playfulness.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner off white section that has a mottled surface. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has scattered areas of paint loss but this is in keeping with the overall look of the piece.

  • On Patrol

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully playful and vibrant Swedish oil, painted on to board in 1971. The artist has worked in a Naïve style (Naïve art is characterised by childlike simplicity of execution and vision. As such it has been valued by modernists seeking to get away from what they see as the insincere sophistication of art created within the traditional system). Flattened forms, bright solid colours and simplified shapes give this painting its playful character.

Two policemen patrol the streets with friendly smiles, and around them other figures can be seen. The artist has played with scale, making the two policemen appear much larger than the other figures.

The painting is housed in simple wood frame, and both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • The Boy

    Sold

    SOLD.

An endearing and outstandingly executed portrait, rendered in oil in 1968.

Painted in an expressionist style, the artwork depicts a well-dressed young boy wearing a beret, in a seated position with his gaze facing the viewer. His silhouette has been uniquely painted with a mix of dark bold outlines as well as white strokes.

The artist shows off his painterly talents, displaying both the use of fine brushwork as well as the use of a palette knife.

Using a muted earthy colours including green, pink and yellow, he has skillfully applied layers of contrasting shades with a palette knife in swift manner to reveal depth, interest and a stunning raw and textural feel.

This oil on board is in very good vintage condition. It housed in its original mid century wood frame that pairs very well with the painting. The frame has some areas of marks and scuffs commensurate with its age.

  • Coastal Memories

    Sold

    SOLD.

This expressive and atmospheric mid century oil on board depicts an abstracted coastal scene with figures. There is a sketch-like quality to the painting, with the figures and structures outlined in thin black strokes, which were probably done free hand on the spot as the artist sketched ‘en plein air’.  A distinctly cool colour palette has been used, including blue, green and purple, imbuing the painting with a calming and relaxing feel. The abstracted, suffused nature of the painting gives us the sense that this is almost a hazy memory, perhaps of good times spent by the coast. There is also a rawness to the quality of the painting – we can see the distinct and coarse brush that the artist has used in many areas, where it has also created areas of impasto (where the paint is thick enough to stand proud of the surface), creating a very textured surface.

The painting is housed in a thin gilt frame, which suits the painting very well. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Convergence

    Sold

    SOLD.

An emotive and raw mid 20th century abstract painting, executed in oil.

Various shades are depicted converging towards one another, almost in slow motion as the respective colours flow.

Composed with a restrained neutral earthy colour palette comprising shades of grey, green, and red – it imbues the work with a subtle and minimalist nature; however the artist has thoughtfully chosen to paint the area on the right in deep red – enhancing the emotive aspect of the work.

The swift brushstrokes add a sense of dynamism to the piece; and thick areas of paint can be seen, adding a beautiful and unique layer of texture.

This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary silver wood frame that has some minor marks and scuffs.

  • Quartet

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and striking oil on canvas depicting 4 figures in a row. Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the artist has actively eliminated any fine details and has instead chosen to use distinct  brushstrokes to form most of the picture. In fact, three quarters of the picture is made up purely of multi directional brushstrokes, without any realistic details. Having said that, the detail has instead been paid to each individual brushstroke, which gives this painting a complexity that encourages us to keep looking.

This painting is housed in a large and gorgeous mid century frame which has a wood outer border, a linen lined section, followed by a deep profile gilt window and a and inner wooden slip in white. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition. A small section of the right edge of the frame appears to have been restored.

  • A Snowy Day

    Sold

    SOLD.

An enchanting mid 20th century snowscape executed in oil.

Upon first glance, what’s most eye catching is the large bird in the middle of the painting soaring across the sky. Despite its impressive size, the artist has wonderfully captured its grace and beauty as it glides through a semi-frozen lake with docked boats.

Short and vertical painterly brushstrokes have been used to paint the snow; and the frosty winter colour palette of blue, grey, green and pale yellow tones lend an air of softness and coolness to the overall work.

This oil on board is in good vintage condition, but do note that the board is slightly warped at the top left hand corner. It is housed in a complementary wooden frame with a linen lining.

  • Venice

    Sold

    SOLD.

This exceptional oil depicts a serene setting of a Venice canal. Our gaze is immediately drawn to the centre of the painting where a boat with an orange sail dominates. The sun casts its light on part of the sail, showing off its vibrant amber and yellow colours. Our eyes are then left to explore the surrounding activity – the silhouettes of people to the left of the canal, the buildings and landmarks beyond, and the clear waters with hints of green running through.

This mid century oil is in good vintage condition with only some minor scuffs to the frame.

    Size: 47 x 55 cm (including frame)

  • Fishing Huts

    Sold

    SOLD.

A fun, playful, mid century Swedish oil, painted on board in a Naïve style (Naïve art is characterised by childlike simplicity of execution and vision. As such it has been valued by modernists seeking to get away from what they see as the insincere sophistication of art created within the traditional system).

A row of red fishing huts line the fishing lake, and behind them we see the forest, and mountains and the salmon pink sky. To the left stands a cheerful figure, adding a wonderful playfulness to the composition.

The painting is currently unframed and is painted onto very sturdy board. It has surface wear around the outermost edges (as shown in photos) where it was previously framed. A new frame would cover these marks. You could also choose to display in its current state on an easel or leant against a shelf. • Grandparents

    Sold

    SOLD.

Part of our ‘family series’ collection, this mid century piece has been painted in oil onto board and depicts two seated figures on chairs.

Large swathes of bold and vivid colour have been unabashedly applied to the canvas, and the artist has also incorporated areas of thick impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface, creating a three dimensional effect. The artist’s painterly style celebrates the medium of oil, encouraging our eyes to soak in his rich and vivid palette.

The figures don’t have facial features, and the background also does not to allude to any particular space. This gives the painting its timeless quality, and asks us instead to appreciate the qualities of form, shape and colour.

The painting is housed in its original mid century gilt frame with an inner fabric lined window. There is some minor cracking to the thick impasto area (very normal due to age) but these areas are very stable. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is some general wear and surface paint losses to the outermost edges of the frame, but this certainly does not detract from its overall appeal.

  • After the Storm

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautifully emotive abstract oil on canvas, painted in 1983.

This impressionist oil captures the misty, foggy feel of the landscape after a heavy storm. Reminiscent of later works by the impressionist artist JMW Turner, this artwork too dispenses the use of hard outlines and any artificial divisions of the visual field that we see in more traditional approaches of realistic painting. Instead, greater prominence is given to the effects of light and atmosphere. Instead of painting the landscape as is, the artist has captured the experience of how we might take in the landscape before us. Smooth. wide brushstrokes sweep across the canvas, in varying layers of blended colour. The sky softly falls upon the darker murkier landscape – we know that soon the heaviness of the post-storm air will dissipate and the light will come again.

The painting is housed in an elegant gilt frame that complements it and adds an illuminating effect. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

  • Church

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beguiling and very elegant oil painting on canvas, painted in 1983.

The artist has done an architectural, sketch -like  style painting of a church, using a series of angled lines to capture the structure of the building. The artist has condensed the form into an almost abstract depiction, leaving out all realistic details. He has created a distinctly raw and expressionist composition, through the use of a very minimalist palette as well as the unevenness of the medium. He has combined areas of impasto where thicker paint has been used, with areas which are much coarser and that leave the substrate showing through. What at first glance appears to be quick sketch like drawing, is in fact a very well executed and considered composition, whose colours create an illuminating and diaphanous effect.

This gorgeous painting is housed in a simple white frame with an inner gilt window that draws out the colours in the painting further. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • The Barge

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large mid century oil painting on canvas depicting a narrow boat and a rowing boat on a river in winter.

There is a beautiful quietness to this scene – it captures the essence of  a cold, crisp winter morning.  The water is perfectly still, and quite possibly icy. We see the crisp reflection of the blue rowing boat in the water. Soft, white snow covers the banks of the river. A black barge is docked on the left side, with a blue rowing boat sitting quietly beside it, its tether hidden by the water.

The artist has been brave in his painting approach and has not shied away from painting a large proportion of the composition (i.e. the river) in a dark colour. But this does not depress the mood of the painting. Rather, it skilfully directs our eyes’ journey. We are initially drawn to the dark river, where the paint is smooth and untextured, but our eyes are then directed up the river and towards the upper half of the picture, where we see the snow and sky. This area of the painting has been painted very differently – with areas of textured impasto and more movement (in contrast to the very still, smooth river). These differing painting techniques give it its unique character, and add depth and interest to the painting.

The painting is housed in a wide profile frame that complements it perfectly. As shown in the photos, here are two small punctures to the left corner (where the black barge is) but this is not noticeable unless closely inspected.  There is a small loss to the middle section of the upper half (also shown in close up photo) but again this is not noticeable unless closely inspected. The colour palette of the painting hides these imperfections well. Please note that in close up of the river, there is some photographic glare due to dark palette. Please view the side-view photos to see the painting without any glare.

  • The Matador

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking mid century gouache and watercolour figure composition, painted in 1955.

A semi abstract depiction of a matador is the focus of this skilfully executed portrait. The artist has intentionally left out realistic details, focusing instead on the outlines, forms, shapes and colours. Behind the figure is an abstracted background – large sections of bright colours juxtapose the figure and give it its context and sense of space and depth.  The brushwork on the figure is much more free-form in comparison to the background which is far more structured, creating a striking contrast between them both.

Painted in both gouache and watercolour onto paper, it is framed within a card mount and a solid oak wood frame. The card mount has some slight age toning and the frame has some minor scuffs typical for its age. The painting is in good vintage condition and sits behind glass, as shown.

  • Low Tide

    Sold

    SOLD.

An outstanding and striking modernist style painting depicting 2 boats left ashore on a quiet beach.

Dark outlines and bold vivid colours have been used to beautifully give rise to the various forms; and the artist has skilfully used flat planes of contrasting colours to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality within the painting.

The long and smooth brushstrokes evoke an overall sense of calm, and there is a lovely transition from the sand to the ocean to the sky.

This oil on board is housed in a robust wooden frame. There are areas of dents and paint loss on the frame (as shown in the images), but both artwork and frame are in good vintage condition overall.

    Size: 45 x 69 cm (including frame)
