  • Pink Apples

    Sold

    SOLD.

A beautiful and brilliantly executed still life oil, painted onto canvas.

This mid century still life has been painted with very expressive brushstrokes, capturing the vitality of the apple branch wonderfully. Despite the broad brushwork, the artist has skilfully depicted the effect of the light on the apples and the leaves, creating a sense of movement within the picture. The apple branch is set against a reddish brown background that plays off the colours of the apples and draws attention to them.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame that complements it very well. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Provence

    Sold

    SOLD

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A small yet characterful landscape painting depicting the Southern Alps in Provence , executed in oil in 1973.

In this picturesque view, mountains in the background and greenery in the foreground have been lined in an almost symmetrical fashion, making this composition highly well-balanced.

Semi-abstract in nature, this landscape scene has been simplified down to expressive broad brushstrokes and angular shapes. The artist has used a pastel colour palette to capture the peace and tranquillity of nature.

This oil has been mounted on panel which is surrounded by a simple white wood frame. Both frame and painting are in excellent vintage condition. Its small size would make it the perfect addition to a shelf, bookshelf or above a bed side table.

  • Skyline Colour

    Sold

    Free UK shipping.

A very large, modernist oil on canvas, painted in 1967. Vibrant colours, bold outlines, and areas of impasto (where the paint has been applied thickly such that it stands proud from the surface) make up this large composition which features a semi abstract city skyline. The artist has played with geometric shapes and forms, while using large blocks of colour painted in an expressive manner.  The painting has a very ‘unrefined’ and ‘raw’ look and feel, typical of mid century modern paintings of this genre.

This large painting is housed in a simple wooden frame which suits it very well. The painting has some scattered areas of surface paint loss which reveal the orange painted layer below but due to the nature of the style of the painting these areas of paint loss add to its character and certainly do not detract from the appeal of the painting.

The composition is well balanced, with four white parasols adding a sense of movement to the painting. The artist has also used several different layers of paint for the  background, creating depth and texture. Details such like the time of day or the location are indiscernible,  but there is a distinct air of light-heartedness and cheerfulness within the painting.

This  oil on canvas is housed in a robust gilt frame with a beaded design. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Tree Grove

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and very striking mid century oil painted on canvas depicting a tree grove by a brook. A deep, rich, earth colour palette has been used – dark greens and browns and oranges are contrasted against the white of the brook and the sky, creating a wonderful sense of depth in the painting. Differing textures can be found across the large canvas, with some areas where the artist has allowed the canvas to show through, and other areas where thick layers of paint and impasto can be found. There is raw quality to the overall composition, and the artist has captured the essence of the natural landscape – the movement of the water in the brook, the light of the sky, and the earthiness of the grass and the trees.

The painting is housed in a simple wood frame, which suits it very well and gives it a slightly more contemporary edge. The large size and expressive style of this painting would make it a real statement feature piece in any interior. Painting and frame are in good vintage condition.

    SOLD.

A large and visually striking modernist style floral still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

Painted in an expressionist manner, the artwork is full of texture and character as it depicts a blooming pot of flowers placed against a blue coloured background.

Our eyes are immediately drawn to the flowers as their lighter shades of white and orange are contrasted against the deep and rich colour palette of dark blues greens and browns.

The artist displays his painterly skills, using the impasto technique by applying thick layers of paint such that it stands proud from the surface and adds a textural feel, as well as confidently executing long and bold brushstrokes to creating a composition full of dynamism.

This oil on canvas is housed in a deep-profile frame with 2 linen-lined windows that pairs perfectly with the painting. There are some very small areas of paint loss on the painting but the work is otherwise in very good vintage condition.

  • Abstract Trees

    Sold

    SOLD.

A subtle yet characterful modernist style landscape painted in 1996, that contains elements of abstraction and minimalism.

Upon first glance, this landscape composition of 2 trees may appear simple to the eye. However as we take time to explore the painting further, one can notice its complexity and distinct exploration on geometric shapes, lines and colours.

Using a restrained palette of varying shades of white, beige and orange, the artist has embraced the layering technique – applying colours over one another in a swift yet thoughtful manner to form this wonderfully textured composition as well as to demonstrate depth to the painting.

A playful range of brushstrokes including dots, shorts dabs and thin vertical strokes have been used, adding liveliness and character to the piece.

This oil on board  is housed in an outstanding grey and brown frame; and the colours of the frame pair perfectly with the painting as they thoroughly complement one another. There is a slight bowing and unevenness to the board.

  • Coast in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD.

A spirited mid century semi abstract oil, painted onto canvas.

Using a restrained palette, the artist has captured the ever changing nature of the coastal landscape and sky – broad, expressive brushstrokes capture the impression of its movement and its transience.

We are able to discern a row of ships far into the distance, but these bend beautifully into the overall composition. There is a satisfying cohesiveness in the picture between the foreground, middle, and background – the coastal rocks, water, ships and sky unify through the brushwork and colour palette.

The painting is housed in its original mid century frame which complements it wonderfully. The inner gilt window illuminates the panting and brings out its palette and tone.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has a small mark to the top edge of the gilt section, as shown in the photos.

  • Construct

    Sold

    SOLD.

This large and very well executed mid century oil on canvas is particularly reminiscent of the St Ives school of Modern British art. Although Swedish in its provenance, it is likely that the artist was also inspired by the coastal areas of Sweden, just like the St Ives artists were by the British coastal town of St Ives. Although largely abstract in its composition, we can just about discern coastal elements – the lower half of the painting depicts the sandy shore, and in the middle section of blue we see the water as well as the triangular shape of the sail of boat, and finally the light greyish green of the sky. The artist has chosen to focus on the shape, forms,  and colours of the coast as his source of inspiration. Even the textural qualities of the painting which includes areas of sgraffito (the technique of scratching the painted surface to reveal the underlying colours and layers) captures the rough and raw quality of the sandy, rocky landscape. The painting also captures the ‘light’ of the coastal area and has a luminosity in its palette and overall appearance.

The canvas is surrounded by slim wood slats, which then sit within an outer white floating box frame.  This unique framing suits the piece wonderfully.   There is scattered craquelure to the painting as shown in the photos, but the surface is very stable.

    SOLD.

A fantastic and well executed modernist still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

The artwork depicts a group of fruits, a bowl and a pitcher laid out on a surface. Bold and distinct dark lines have been used to create these shapes and form, and a restrained palette that primarily comprises shades of blue, as well as pops of orange, green and brown have been used.

Cubist is nature, the artist has fragmented the objects down and represented them from several angles to highlight their three-dimensional form, whilst simultaneously emphasising the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas.

This oil on canvas has has a very minor spot of paint loss. It is housed in a complementary beige frame that has some areas of scuff. Nevertheless, the painting is in overall very good vintage condition.

  • Harmony

    Sold

    SOLD.

An uplifting and richly textured mid-century abstract oil composition that explores the wonderful elements of colour and brushstrokes.

What’s most striking is the use of the impasto technique, as thick layers of paint have been applied using broad gestural brushstrokes onto the painting surface. With each pass of the brush adds a little more texture onto the dried paint beneath it, leaving to form an imprint of the artist’s brush as well as a raw textural and three-dimensional quality.

What is clearly evident is the artist’s deep understanding of colour. Featuring a dance of elegant and lively shades of blue, green and yellow, the colours have been skilfully layered on top and beside one another, enriching the painting with a harmonious feel.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary grey wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There are some very minor scuffs and areas of paint residue on the frame.

  • Terrain

    Sold

    SOLD.

A tranquil and visually calming modernist style landscape composition, executed in oil in 1953.

Realistic details have intentionally been left out, as the artist reconstructs this nature landscape terrain in a semi-abstract manner through the used of soft colours, flattened forms and expressive brushstrokes.

The painting demonstrates a subtle dance between colours, as planes of soft neutral shades including sand and green have been used to illustrate the distribution of crop across the terrain as well as to create a strong sense of depth and width in the painting.

A seemingly simple yet very effective still life in oil, painted onto board and dated 1986.

This well-balanced still life is one that is very satisfying to look at. Two bottles and three terracotta pots sit on a table, casually and quietly. Yet their presence seems strong, solid, and unyielding.

A beautiful and throughly well-executed expressionist style coastal scape depicting  a row of boats docked near the shore at sunrise, painted in oil and dated 1973.

A range of patterns, shapes and colours fill the canvas, making up an abstracted landscape that appears to be houses on the side a mountain. As we spend time to study its colours, forms and play on geometric shapes, there is more than meets the eye.

At over a metre in length, this striking abstract oil would certainly make a statement in any interior. It is housed in its original mid century frame. • Silhouettes

    Sold

    SOLD.

An expressive and textured mid century oil, painted onto canvas.

This rather mysterious painting features a group of figures gathering and judging from their attire of dark robes, they appear to be monks. There is a real sense of movement within the picture, almost as if it the artist has painted a slightly blurry photograph. We get a palpable sense of the figures walking and gathering. The details of the figures such as their facial features, and the location they are at has been left out intentionally – the artist has chosen to focus on the shapes and forms of the figures, leaving only their silhouettes, juxtaposing their dark robes against the lighter white walls of the building behind them.

Thick layers of paint have been applied with both palette knife and brush, giving the picture a wonderful depth. The artist has used a restrained palette of black, blue, brown and white, which focuses our attention on the forms and figures.

The horizontally long shape of the artwork would make it an ideal piece to hang above a piece of furniture. Its restrained yet deep palette give it a flexibility, allowing it to suit both classic and modern interiors.

This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a silver frame which has some minor scuffing but this is in keeping with its age and style.

  • Fauvist Landscape

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large mid century oil on canvas of a semi abstract landscape, painted in 1955.

Reminiscent of the 20th century modernist style of ‘fauvism’, this painting features the classic fauve feature of separating colour from its descriptive, representational purpose and allowing it to exist on the canvas as an independent element. in this picture, the colour establishes a structure within the work without being true to the natural world. Its brushstrokes also carry the fauve style of being short, separated and unblended, creating a sense of movement within the picture.

The painting is housed in a very complementary dark blue floater frame. This frame allows the edges of the canvas to be in full view, with a small gap between the canvas and the frame, giving it a more contemporary look.  The painting and frame are in good vintage condition with no outstanding issues.
