A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1966 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have been represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of mostly unidentifiable objects sit on a black and white surface, with one green ball punctuating the centre of the composition. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the green in the middle, which draws our eyes to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This oil on board is wonderfully presented in a distressed wood frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very light wear but this suits its overall distressed style.

A brilliantly executed modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1965.

The artwork depicts a tabletop setting featuring an assortment of vegetables including carrots, radish, tomatoes, and a cabbage.

Working with a modernist ethos in mind, the artist has intentionally chosen not to focus on realistic details, and instead explores the use of colours, brushstrokes, form and shapes to create a sense of depth and space.

Expressive  and lightly textured brushstrokes fill the canvas and we are able to identify distinct areas of colours, where the artist has skilfully used contrasting flat areas of patches of colour to give rise to the various forms within this composition.

A rich and vivid modernist composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

With a myriad of bold and striking colours in a series of geometric shapes, we can discern an interior scene. A framed painting of flowers hangs against a brick wall, and to the right a range of vessels sit on a table with their shadows cast against the wall behind them. The artist has not used the traditional and realistic angles, and has instead flattened the perspective and used multiple angles within the composition. The artist explores the formal elements of shape, line, colour and pattern to create this cubist composition.
