    This panoramic winter landscape captures the stillness and crispness of winter. A tall tree punctuates the centre of the composition, its reflection cast in the still icy lake in front of it. A couple of houses can be seen perched on the top of the hill, and behind them a far reaching forest that draws our eyes deep into the picture and lends a sense of depth.     Depicted here is a large monument in Cairo, Egypt. This location has been inscribed on the reverse. We believe it could be the Ibn Tulun Mosque which is situated in the heart of Cairo, and has a similar architectural layout and form. The artist has focused on the geometric forms of the monument’s walls, abstracting it down to large white blocks with bold outlines. In the distance we also see the minaret, which is central to the overall composition and creates a focal point for our eyes. The artist has also added an aggregate to the surface, creating a very textured composition, with areas of thickly applied paint.

    The painting is dated to the bottom left, but the inscription is quite indistinct. From what we can see, it appears to be ’60.

    A very large and striking 20th century oil, painted onto canvas and dated ’98.

    Brightly coloured figures fill the scene, each one overlapping and layering onto another. There is incredible depth within the picture – the way the artist has layered the forms, some opaque and some translucent, gives us the sense of a very busy street scene with lots of people on their way to work. We can just about make out a figure in a suit, carrying a briefcase. Interestingly, as our eyes scan the canvas,  we notice that the figure’s heads morph from human ones to animal ones, perhaps an allusion to the herd mentality or the humdrum of working life.

    Whatever one’s interpretation, the painting is brilliantly executed, with a rich variety of colours and textures filling the surface. This statement piece would certainly make for some interesting conversation.

  • Evening Gathering

    A vibrant and striking mid century oil painting depicting a group of bedouins gathering together and surrounded by lush greenery.

    Painted in an expressionist manner, the artist has intentionally left out intricate details such as the facial features of the figures, and instead has chosen to focus on the harmony of colours, skilful brushstrokes as well as the balancing of shape and form.

    Through the use of swift and confident brushstrokes, rich and vivid colours layer upon one another to reveal the respective forms, whilst creating an outstanding textural and lively feel to the piece.

    This oil on canvas is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original hessian frame with an inner grainy wood as well as gilt window. There is minor surface paint loss to the lower edge of the gilt section of the frame, as shown in the images.

  • Frosted Fields

    A striking and very picturesque 20th century modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas and dated 1999.

    The artist has captured the essence and feeling of the cold and wintery rural landscape. 3 solid blocks of brown that represent the farmhouses sit stoically in the field, with a frost covered field before them. The artist has created layers of earthy colours in short and expressive brushstrokes, and has possibly used a sponge like tool to dab out areas, giving this picture a very distinct texture and depth.  To the left a group of alpine trees create balance and structure in the composition.

    The painting is housed in a simple gilt frame which suits it very well. The painting is in good vintage condition. The frame has some scattered scuff marks and scratches, and some general age related wear to the corners.
