  • Seated Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large and very well executed mid century modernist portrait in oil, painted onto canvas.

A male figure in his workwear sits on stool, with his cap resting on his knee, and perhaps a box of cigarettes clasped in his hand, captured at a point where he is taking a break from work. With its solid patches of colour and clearly defined forms, this striking portrait contains elements of post-impressionism, with the artist seeking to express emotions rather than just simply optical impressions. The figure looks straight at us, but his expression is kind, and there is a sense of warmth and familiarity to him.

We can just about see the view outside the window – a series of geometrical shapes alluding to houses and buildings. These geometry of angles and contrasting angles continues throughout the picture, with definitive forms and lines building up the picture.

This oil on canvas is housed in complementary slim wood frame.  There is creasing to the canvas as shown, but the painting is in good vintage condition overall.

  • The Painter’s Studio

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist interior scene, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1958.

While working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has also incorporated a playful element to the work, creating a visual puzzle for the viewer.  Intricate lines, forms, shapes and colour draw our eyes inwards encouraging us to look around this studio and build an awareness of its space and depth. There is a sense of familiarity and informality within the studio that the artist has masterfully conveyed.

The use of the Droste effect, where the artist has created a painting within a painting, creates a riddle for our eyes, beckoning us to figure out where the painting on the easel within the composition ends, and where the studio begins.  There is also the incorporation of light and shadow, but the artist has used non realistic colours to communicate this, and  has used flat planes of contrasting colours and angles to capture the light coming in through the windows of the studio.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner white slip, which suits the painting perfectly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

There is a cinematic and theatrical feel to this piece – a feeling that the objects have been grouped together on a stage, knowing that they are bring watched by us. The artist has chosen objects that have strong, clear, statement-like shapes, and has set them against a geometric background, drawing our attention to the lines and forms.

This pastel is framed in its original light silvery-gold frame , and is set behind glass. The pastel is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some minor scuffs which do not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Cubist Figures

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very unique mid century portrait, painted in oil onto canvas.

Cubist in nature, the artist has taken an interesting perspective in the portrayal of two figures. Their forms have been flattened, and the painting has a strong focus on line, pattern, colour and angular shapes.

Through the use of distinct and repeated brushstrokes in one particular direction, the artist has used flat angular shapes to represent the different sides of the figures to suggest their three-dimensional structures.

Through the use of a monochromatic palette with unique hints of blue and brown, the tonal gradation from darker moody tones to lighter shades as well as the use of bold outlines also allows the figures to be more three dimensional.

This oil on canvas is housed in a light blue painted distressed frame that suits the painting wonderfully. There is some scattered craquelure present as shown but the paint layer is stable overall. There are minor scuffs to the frame which is in keeping with the style. Overall the painting and frame are both in very good vintage condition.
