    A charming and very pleasant modernist oil townscape, painted by the established Swedish artist Stig Wernheden (1921-1997), whose works have been represented at public collections in Sweden including the Moderna Museet, Malmö Museum, Snuff & Match Museum, Ystad Art Museum and Malmö City Hall.

    Featuring a scenic view of buildings and trees, the composition depicts a group of figures huddled together with some indiscernible colourful items, as they congregate in the middle of the town.

    Painted with a modernist ethos, the artist has used flat blocks of contrasting colours to create a sense of space and depth. All realistic details have been omitted, and our attention is drawn to painterly elements such as shape, form, brushstroke and colour.

    A combination of lightly textured brushstrokes as well as warm tones including shades of blue, green white and brown have been used, adding a very soothing and relaxing effect to the painting.

    A very unique mid century portrait, painted in oil onto canvas.

    Cubist in nature, the artist has taken an interesting perspective in the portrayal of two figures. Their forms have been flattened, and the painting has a strong focus on line, pattern, colour and angular shapes.

    Through the use of distinct and repeated brushstrokes in one particular direction, the artist has used flat angular shapes to represent the different sides of the figures to suggest their three-dimensional structures.

    Through the use of a monochromatic palette with unique hints of blue and brown, the tonal gradation from darker moody tones to lighter shades as well as the use of bold outlines also allows the figures to be more three dimensional.

    This oil on canvas is housed in a light blue painted distressed frame that suits the painting wonderfully. There is some scattered craquelure present as shown but the paint layer is stable overall. There are minor scuffs to the frame which is in keeping with the style.     This abstract composition blurs the boundary between painting and sculpture, with its three dimensional surface protruding from the board. A series grooves and and lines have been etched into the thickly painted surface, which features an array of thoughtfully arranged geometric shapes in rich and lively colours. The grooves and lines almost resemble threads, almost as though the surface has been embroidered. The artist has clearly pushed the medium to its limits, experimenting with several textural effects.

    A very large and textured mid century abstract modernist oil composition, painted in 1964.

    Titled ‘Forest (Movement through Forest)’, it gives us wonderful insight into the artist’s source of inspiration. On the one hand, this piece is completely abstract and without its title, we might only see something non-representational. Here at The Discerning Palette, before translating the title, this piece reminded us of levels in an industrial building or something related to construction and the modern industrial world. The title added another layer of meaning to the piece, and opened our eyes to a different interpretation altogether. We were suddenly able to ‘see the wood through the trees’, pun intended.

    Dynamic strokes criss-cross across the canvas in a myriad of angles and levels. Areas of impasto have been created to the thick application of paint, resulting in a piece full of texture and layers of blended and unblended colour.

    This exceptional oil has been framed interestingly, with strips of  clear perspex fixed to the canvas edges. This gives a box like appearance to the piece, and adds to its ‘modern’ look. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is missing a small corner to the lower right, as shown in the close ups. This missing corner is not obvious until looked at closely.

    The painting depicts a silhouette of a female figure in yellow clothing, set against a light coloured background.

    The facial features of the figure have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.

    Large swathes of rich and vivid colours have been applied to the canvas, creating areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. The artist has also wonderfully layered contrasting colours to reveal  great depth within this striking painting.

    A very large and very unique semi abstract mid century composition in oil, painted in 1962.

    The scene appears to be of two swimmers, captured from a very interesting angle. It is almost as if we, the viewers, are under the water looking up at them. The two figures have just dived in, and we see the swoosh of the water and bubbles all around them.

    The artist has left the composition very ‘open’, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to capture the effect of the moving water. The figures have also been paired right down, their bodies only partially visible.

    The way the artist has depicted this scene is very inspiring – it is certainly not an easy scene to paint, and yet he has managed to put across the essence of what is at play here – the way the light hits the water and the figures, and the resulting distortions, as well as the sense of movement and air within the water.

    In this painting, short and expressive brushstrokes have been applied in vivid and distinct colours. The artist has used a series of horizontal strokes in a layering of colour to create a sense of depth of space.  The panoramic city landscape beyond and the greener landscape to the foreground have been reduced down to short dabs of bold colours that create a beautiful sense of movement within the picture. There is a wonderful sense that the artist is very fond of the landscape he has depicted.

    This painting is also carries elements of the fauvist style of separating colour from its descriptive, representational purpose and allowing it to exist on the canvas as an independent element.

    This painting is housed in its original mid century linen lined frame. There is some general ageing to the frame that is commensurate with age, and also in keeping with its overall look. The painting is in good vintage condition.
