A compelling mid-century abstract composition that reduces a rural scene to bold planes of colour, expressive marks and simplified architectural forms, painted in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

A long, low white building anchors the horizon, its stark geometry set against an expansive, softly worked sky. Around it, fragmented shapes in the foreground suggest fields, tracks, rooftops and scattered structures, giving the composition the feeling of a landscape observed and then reconstructed through abstraction.

The work has a distinctly modernist, semi-abstract quality, balancing recognisable elements with areas that dissolve into pure shape and colour. Strong horizontal divisions create a sense of distance, while angular forms cutting across the foreground lend movement and an almost collage-like quality to the composition.

The palette is wonderfully restrained yet punctuated with colour. Slate blue, charcoal, smoky grey, muted olive and blue-green dominate, contrasted by the brilliant white of the central building. Small flashes of brick red, cobalt blue, mustard yellow and green enliven the darker passages and draw the eye around the canvas.

Brushwork is confident and varied, moving between broad, flat passages of paint and more vigorous, scraped and scumbled marks. Visible layering and areas where colours overlap or break through one another give the surface a tactile, painterly quality. The loose handling of the sky contrasts beautifully with the sharper geometry below, reinforcing the tension between landscape and abstraction.

This oil on canvas is presented in an elegant linen-lined wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs.
