    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid-century figurative portrait, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The subject, an elongated female figure dressed in a patterned blouse, is seated with delicately folded hands resting in her lap. Her simplified, geometric face and dramatically shaped black hair draw attention to the minimal features, emphasising the serenity and poise of the figure.

The composition is carefully balanced with layered rectangular forms in muted earth tones – taupe, beige, and chocolate – serving as a backdrop. These shapes subtly echo the rigid pose of the figure while enhancing the sense of depth through tonal shifts.

The artist’s use of colour is restrained and harmonious, favouring neutral and natural tones, with a single pop of red behind the subject that introduces focus. The brushwork throughout is intentional—smooth and flat in most areas, thick and more expressive in others like the blouse—creating a dynamic interplay between form and texture, and adding visual interest to the scene.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary frame with an inner cream border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Standing Form

    Standing Form

    Sold

    SOLD

An evocative mid-century modernist abstract painting that presents a standing human figure that has been deconstructed into geometric and organic forms.

The artist has used a mixed-media approach to create a textured, layered composition, evoking a sense of depth and contemplation. The figure emerges subtly from an interplay of muted tones—soft greys, whites, beiges, and deep blues—contrasted with an irregular dark shape at its centre which has been collaged in, possibly symbolising an internal essence or emotional core.

Executed in an abstract figurative style, the composition features dynamic brushstrokes that shift between structured, block-like applications of paint and fluid, gestural marks. The juxtaposition of hard-edged forms with softer, blended areas enhances the painting’s sense of movement and spatial ambiguity. The overall effect is both contemplative and expressive, making it a compelling piece.

This mixed media on card is presented within a white mount. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There is some scuffing to the frame.

    Sold

    SOLD

A radiant mid-century figurative painting that captures a moment of leisure by the beach, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1947.

A woman sits comfortably atop a vibrant orange towel, dressed in a blue bathing suit and shaded by a straw hat, completely absorbed in her book. Behind her is a lush coastal landscape scene, where a few distant figures stroll along the beach.

The brushwork is lively and expressive, with confident, loose strokes that convey texture and movement. Bold splashes of colour—especially the warm orange of the towel and the verdant greens of the surrounding landscape—create a dynamic contrast with the cooler blue tones of the woman’s outfit and the sandy, coastal hues in the background.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary frame with an inner and outer gilt window. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some paint losses, but this is in keeping with its vintage style.

  • The Blue Vest

    The Blue Vest

    Sold

    SOLD

An excellently executed modernist oil on canvas, painted by Bo Hultén (b.1945), whose works have been presented in the Modern Museum of Art, and the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm. His work is also presented at the Gripsholm Gallery in Stockholm and the Municipal Museum in Malmö

This painting by Bo Hultén is a relatively early work. His style is reminiscent of the modernist tradition in which figures are deconstructed into basic shapes and surfaces. The geometric structure has parallels to Cubism and Post-Cubism, in which volumes and perspectives dissolve into flat fields of colour. The face is anonymous and unspecified, which enhances the abstract expression and directs the viewer’s focus to the shapes of the body and the colour composition.

The blue garment in the centre acts as a central colour point, while the dark and light contrasts create a balanced composition. The orange element in the lower left corner breaks off and adds dynamism to the painting. The background is minimalist and neutral, which makes the figure appear more clearly.

Hultén’s work can be placed within Scandinavian modernism, where an austere but poetic simplicity often occurs. His way of simplifying human figures into almost iconic forms is reminiscent of artists such as Fernand Léger or Swedish modernists such as Olle Bærtling (although Bærtling was more pronounced abstract).

The painting is presented in a wood frame which suits it perfectly. There are some marks and general age wear to painting, but it is in good condition overall. The frame has some scuffs, but is also in good condition.

    SOLD

An emotive and impactful figurative portrait that presents a seated female figure depicted in a heavily textured, abstract expressionist style, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1974.

The subject is shown in profile, gazing toward the left side of the canvas, with indistinct yet evocative facial features. Her dark hair contrasts against a muted, atmospheric background. The figure’s posture suggests quiet contemplation, as her hands appear to rest gently in front of her, adding a sense of stillness to the composition.

Rendered with a cool and moody palette dominated by deep blues, greys, and earth tones, the painting conveys an introspective or solemn tone. The background consists of layered, loosely applied greys, white and blues, allowing the figure to subtly emerge from the surroundings.

The brushwork is thick and gestural, with expressive impasto lending depth and raw physicality to the canvas. The artist’s energetic application of paint, particularly in the rough yet deliberate strokes defining the face and clothing, contributes to the painting’s dynamic texture and emotional weight. The overall effect is one of movement within stillness, capturing both the physicality and the fleeting essence of the subject.

    SOLD

A striking German mid century modernist portrait composition, painted in oil onto board.

This painting is a powerful, emotionally resonant portrait that balances graphic boldness with subtle introspection. The interplay of strong lines, muted colours, and stylized forms creates a dynamic composition that draws the viewer’s attention to the subject’s expression and posture, inviting contemplation of her inner world.

The figure is rendered in broad, flat planes of colour, outlined with thick black lines that emphasize form and contour. Although this is a painting, the style is reminiscent of linocut or woodcut prints, and is possibly inspired by printmaking techniques. Interestingly, the artist seems to have created the outlines by carving out the surface, revealing the underlying surface of the board. The angular lines and structured background give the composition a sense of rhythm and movement.

This oil on board is set in a frame with a slight bevel, which complements the boldness of the artwork without overpowering it. There is a small area of paint loss to the lower left corner but the painting is otherwise in very good condition. The frame has some minor wear, commensurate with age,
