  • Quay Cranes

    Quay Cranes

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist seascape composition in oil, painted into board and dated 1945.

This nautical piece depicts a winter harbourside scene, with boats docked by harbour cranes. In the distance beyond the boats, the composition is balanced by tall trees, creating depth within the picture. The painting is wonderfully textured with a matte effect and has a very painterly feel. The artist has used a range of gentle but diaphanous colours, capturing the beautiful light that is cast on this winter’s day. There are a series of juxtapositions evident, such as the way the softer curved forms of the boats contrast with the shaper harder angles of the cranes and the dock. The blues and mustard tones of the boats also contrast with the whites of the ice and the snow.

Overall, this winter harbour scene has a very tranquil and restful feel to it. It captures the essence of a winter day beautifully, and would make a brilliant piece to rest tired eyes on.

This large oil on board is housed in a deep profile mid century painted wood frame which suits the painting beautifully. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffing, commensurate for its age.

  • Thoughts in Blue

    Thoughts in Blue

    Sold

    SOLD

An engaging and powerful abstract composition by British contemporary artist Lloyd Durling, painted in oil onto linen board. Signed, titled and dated 2024 on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

This oil on linen board is housed in a complementary walnut stained oak frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

As a result of this, our focus is very much directed towards the form of the apples as well as the background, without any distraction. It draws our attention to the beauty of simplicity. The reflection of the 3 apples has been brilliantly executed, and displays the skill of the artist’s hand. The artist has created a wonderful texture to the piece using a very interesting technique of alternating the thickness of the paint, resulting in more depth and complexity.

This oil on canvas has been laid onto board, and is housed in a complementary dark wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very slight scuffs.
