By the Lighthouse
SOLD
A soothing and brilliantly executed composition that depict a serene harbour scene, painted in oil onto board by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974) whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.
This scenic painting captures a view of moored boats with masts extending upwards by a dockside, and a lighthouse in the background.
The artist has worked under a largely modernist ethos, simplifying the scene down to blocks of colours, using contrasting tones to create depth and space within the picture.
The brushstrokes are smooth and gentle. The palette is muted and harmonious, featuring soft blues, greens, greys, whites, and earthy yellows with occasional hints of red or brown. This subdued colour scheme evokes a quiet, atmospheric mood, enhancing the calmness and simplicity of the scene.
This oil on board is housed in a unique gilt frame with layers of a black, silver, as well as a cream border. The painting is excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some losses to its edges.
