  • Forest

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and textured mid century abstract modernist oil composition, painted in 1964.

Titled ‘Forest (Movement through Forest)’, it gives us wonderful insight into the artist’s source of inspiration. On the one hand, this piece is completely abstract and without its title, we might only see something non-representational. Here at The Discerning Palette, before translating the title, this piece reminded us of levels in an industrial building or something related to construction and the modern industrial world. The title added another layer of meaning to the piece, and opened our eyes to a different interpretation altogether. We were suddenly able to ‘see the wood through the trees’, pun intended.

Dynamic strokes criss-cross across the canvas in a myriad of angles and levels. Areas of impasto have been created to the thick application of paint, resulting in a piece full of texture and layers of blended and unblended colour.

This exceptional oil has been framed interestingly, with strips of  clear perspex fixed to the canvas edges. This gives a box like appearance to the piece, and adds to its ‘modern’ look. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame is missing a small corner to the lower right, as shown in the close ups. This missing corner is not obvious until looked at closely.

A very striking and lively mid century coastal landscape, executed in oil onto board.

This scenic painting depicts a lush forest landscape by a coast, and it contains post-impressionist qualities as it is characterised by rich saturated colours as well as distinctive brushstrokes.

A range of vivid colours including shades of green, blue and orange have been used, and the gradient of colours transition so seamlessly and also help to create a sense of depth to the painting. In addition to the selection of lively colours, the use of short and brisk expressive brushstrokes enriches the painting as it overflows with energy.

This oil on canvas is housed in an off-white frame with inner gilt border. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There are some losses to the frame (as shown in close ups)

  • Horseback

    Sold

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A really fun and striking mid century modernist landscape composition with cubist elements, painted in oil onto canvas.

Here we see four figures on horseback by the coast, with an orange roof house to the left of the picture. The artist has very clearly focused attention on capturing the formal qualities (shape, form and colour) of the landscape and figures. We are made aware of the flatness of the canvas (a typically modernist ethos), as the picture is essentially a range of carefully placed coloured shapes, yet there is a still great depth to the composition. The colours are vibrant and striking, and the composition is balanced and very harmonious.

This oil on canvas is housed in a slim wooden frame, which complements the painting very well.  The painting and frame are both in excellent vintage condition.

  • Houses by the Pines

    Sold

    SOLD.

An exceptional mid century modernist landscape composition, executed in oil onto canvas.

In this delightful landscape composition, pine trees are presented in an open forest, with rows of coloured houses behind them.

As we explore the painting, the wide spectrum of rich and saturated colours used in this work draws the viewer in, and makes it a visual feast for the eyes.

The artist displays an excellent understanding of colour relationship, as he layers and pairs contrasting shades using short and brisk brushstrokes, establishing a harmonious and well-balanced feel whilst adding a textural quality to the painting.

As we pay close attention to the pine trees, we notice that the artist has also created an effective colour gradient transition from light shades of orange at the top to darker shades of brown towards the bottom. We can perhaps discern that artist was trying to capture sunlight hitting the top part of the trees, juxtaposed against the shadier interior of the woods.

This oil on board is housed in a well-suited wood frame with an inner gilt and linen lining. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

There is a wonderful softness and diaphanous quality to this painting which makes it very unique.

  • Portrait in Yellow

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large and brilliantly executed modernist figurative oil portrait by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

There is some light craquelure to the lower half of the painting, and an area of paint loss along the lower section, as shown in the close ups. • Swinging Acrobats

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very striking mid century composition of two acrobats swinging in action, executed in watercolour onto paper.

  • The Duo

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed and very striking modernist figurative oil painting by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The facial features of the figures have been intentionally left out, focusing our attention to the power and beauty of colour.

Through the use of fine and detailed brushstrokes, the artist has skilfully reconstructed this scene down to flat blocks of contrasting colours to highlight the respective forms.

  • The Pier

    Sold

    SOLD.

A large mid century modernist coastalscape, painted in oil onto canvas.

In this composition we see a long pier heading out towards the sea, with the backs of a figure and horse cart walking away from us. In the distance, a large cloud hangs over a ship, with streams of rain visible. The artist has used two thirds of the composition to paint the sky, yet there is real sense of the vastness of the coastal shoreline. The artist has carefully and delicately used the tip of his brush to paint in wonderful details – such as the little red bed sitting on the line between the poles, the horse drawn cart, the ship out at sea, as well as the lines showing the pouring rain in the distance. The artist has captured the essence of the coastal scene through his expressive yet considered brushwork, imbuing the painting with depth, movement, and tranquillity.

  • The Pot

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto board and dated 1957.

Upon first glance, our eyes are immediately drawn to the jar in the middle whose larger size as well as striking dark brown and white colours that contrast starkly capture our attention.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has made a conscious decision not to focus on realistic details and has reduced the forms down to expressive brushstrokes, blocks of rich colour as well as bold white outlines.

Distinct expressive multi-directional brushstrokes fill the canvas, and have been executed with vigour and confidence. The artist displays a deep understanding of colour as he skilfully overlays contrasting shades to demonstrate depth and interest to the painting, and the unique white bold outlines wonderfully accentuate the three dimensionality of the objects.

  • The Swimmers

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very large and very unique semi abstract mid century composition in oil, painted in 1962.

The scene appears to be of two swimmers, captured from a very interesting angle. It is almost as if we, the viewers, are under the water looking up at them. The two figures have just dived in, and we see the swoosh of the water and bubbles all around them.

The artist has left the composition very ‘open’, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to capture the effect of the moving water. The figures have also been paired right down, their bodies only partially visible.

The way the artist has depicted this scene is very inspiring – it is certainly not an easy scene to paint, and yet he has managed to put across the essence of what is at play here – the way the light hits the water and the figures, and the resulting distortions, as well as the sense of movement and air within the water.

This large oil on canvas is housed in a light frame with linen border. There are some minor scuffs to the frame, and some very slight age toning to the linen border. Overall the painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
