Still Life with Lantern

SOLD

An expressive mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1963.

It presents a carefully arranged tabletop composition – a lush green plant with broad leaves dominates the foreground, while various vessels, including a glass lantern, a white pitcher, and a brown bottle, as well as a lime and onions are thoughtfully positioned against an abstracted background.

The artist has worked under a largely modernist ethos, subtly fragmenting the scene down to blocks of colours, using contrasting tones to create depth and space within the picture.

The palette is a sophisticated blend of cool and neutral tones, including muted greens, earthy browns, soft greys, and hints of blue. The subdued colour harmony enhances the sense of quiet stillness.

The brushwork is loose yet deliberate, with visible and expressive strokes that add texture and movement to the composition. The layering of paint and dynamic application suggest a painterly approach, lending the scene a sense of immediacy and liveliness.

This oil on canvas is very well suited linen-lined frame with an inner cream border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has minor wear, commensurate with age.
