A very well executed mid century modernist still life composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

A violin sits atop music sheet notes, leaning against a stack of books that has a candle resting on it. Perhaps this painting alludes to the well known phrase ‘burning the midnight oil’, where someone has spent a long time studying and practicing their music. The well burnt candle seems to suggest this – that work has been done through the night.

The artwork has been painted in an expressionist manner in a rich and vivid palette, with gestural and textured brushwork is visible. Areas of impasto can be seen, where the paint has been applied thickly, giving this painting its textured surface.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary dark wood frame with an inner gilt as well as linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has minor scuffs, but this is in keeping with its vintage style.
