A skilfully executed mid-century modernist style abstract composition with simplified forms, executed in oil onto board by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The composition appears to depict an outdoor scene with architectural elements. On the left, a human figure stands atop a series of geometric shapes, possibly suggesting steps or platforms. The figure is heading towards a structure resembling a building in the background.

Modernist in its ethos, the artist has skilfully abstracted the composition down to blocks of contrasting colour, demonstrating a sense of depth to the composition.

The colour palette is a mix of earthy and muted shades. The artist’s brushstrokes are broad and lightly textured, giving the painting a tactile quality.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has some losses at its top edge, otherwise it is in good vintage condition.

    Size: 30.5 x 53.5 cm (including frame)

A fantastic mid-century geometric abstract composition titled ‘The Library’, dated 1966 and painted in oil onto board.

The composition features a meticulous arrangement of rectangular shapes and lines, evoking the structured complexity of a library’s architecture.

The painting uses a palette of monochrome  tones, such as greys, whites, and browns, punctuated with vibrant pops of colour—reds, yellows, greens, and blues—that add energy to the otherwise subdued composition.

The work plays with balance and asymmetry, creating a sense of depth and spatial rhythm through its overlapping blocks and grids.

The precise lines and angles give the piece a dynamic yet controlled appearance, reminiscent of the orderly arrangement of bookshelves.

This large oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame painted black. The painting and frame have some marks and imperfections as shown in close ups.

    Size: 61 x 76 cm (including frame)
