A semi abstract mid century oil on canvas of a winter landscape, painted in 1957.

In the horizon was see a spread of farmhouses, whose scale is tiny compared to the vastness of the fields. There is a quietness and stillness to the painted scene, which has a very calming and restful effect.

  • Horseman

    Sold

    SOLD.

This mid century geometric abstract is painted in oil onto board and presented within an off white slip and a gilt frame.

Drawing on a distinctly modernist ethos, this painting is reminiscent of works by artists such as Pablo Picasso. We see a removal of ‘superfluous’ elements of both animal and human to reach a simple linear abstraction. The artist has intentionally chosen not to depict the figures realistically, and has instead reduced them down into shapes and lines. Simple yet effective outlines connect seamlessly, standing out against a vivid background of reds, greens, and whites to create this striking composition.

The painting is housed in a excellent frame that suits the picture brilliantly. It has an off white slip and a gilt frame with hints of red. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Houses on a Hill

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A wonderfully textured mid-century landscape oil painting, depicting a row of houses on a hill top.

Largely abstract in composition, the artist focuses on colour contrasts to create a sense of depth and space and has used blocks of muted subdued tones including shades of taupe and green to form this composition.

Upon closer inspection of the painting,  we can notice how layers of colours have been skilfully and thoughtfully applied – using cobalt blue as the starting undertone colour on the right, and burnt orange on the left.

The artist has also used the impasto technique, using broad and expressive brushstrokes to create thick and creamy layers of paint to form a raw textural and three-dimensional effect.

Furthermore, there is a layer of varnish that coats the surface of the painting. This gives it a layer of shine, enhancing its aesthetic appeal whilst acting as a layer of protection to the artwork.

This oil on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original champagne gold frame that has areas of marks commensurate with its age.

Do note that some glare is evident in the photograph due to the varnish on the picture.

  • In the Woods

    Sold

    SOLD.

A wonderfully expressive mid century oil on canvas, depicting a lush wooded landscape.

Bold, painterly brushstrokes capture the effects of the elements on the landscape – we get a sense of a light wind blowing through the trees, their branches swaying side to side, the leaves rustling as they go. The artist has used rich, vivid colours to capture the array of hues and shades of the woods. A lighter palette ahs been used for the top half of the picture, where the tree canopy is more exposed to the light of the sky. As we move further down the picture, a deeper, darker, earthier palette has  been used to depict lush depths of the woods and the forest floor.

This oil painting is housed in a wood frame with visible grain. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.

  • Interlink

    Sold

    Free UK Shipping Only.

A large emotive and powerful acrylic on board, painted in 1975.

Abstract in nature, the painting focuses our attention on non-objective artistic elements such as  colour, line, shape and form.

Executed in bold primary colours of blue, red and yellow, expressive lines and geometric shapes interlink with one another to define this space on the canvas and form an aesthetically striking and well-balanced pattern.

As the work does not represent visual reality, the artist has instead used the respective elements to emphasise his inner feelings and emotion. With its saturated colours and dynamic forms that add a highly energetic feel as well as being close to a meter in height, this painting will make a statement piece in any interior.

This acrylic on board is in excellent vintage condition. It is housed in its original wood frame that has some marks and scuffs (as shown in the images)

  • Meadow

    Sold

    SOLD.

A rich and earthy mid century abstract composition, painted in oil onto canvas, and framed in a very complementary gilt frame.

Broad, distinct, and painterly brushstrokes have been applied to the canvas to create this almost abstract landscape scene. There are elements of this painting that are very much reminiscent of the Modernist painter Paul Cezanne. Although this piece has moved closer towards abstraction, it carries the similar traits of repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes that Cezanne had in his pictures. Here the artist has also used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. There is also great vigour and energy in this painting.

It is housed in a simple gilt frame that illuminates the painting. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some scuffs mainly to the lower section. There is some wear to the bottom edge of the frame.

  • Pontoon

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A semi-abstract mid century geometric painting in oil, dated 1954.

Here the artist has captured an industrial marine structure, the pontoon crane. The artist has flattened the composition into sections of flat coloured planes, as well as dark angular lines. Through the use of these geometric shapes and lines, the artist has conveyed the ‘industrial’ sense of the scene through these formal qualities, rather than through a realistic depiction of the crane, pontoon and harbour buildings. This is very much a modernist ethos, where artists painting in this period were incorporating the aesthetic of the ‘machine’ and other industrialist activities into their art.

This oil painting is housed in a robust solid wood frame, which suits it very well. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The oak frame has some general scuffing and a small indent to the left and right edges (as seen in photos) but this does not detract from its overall attractiveness.

  • Portrait in Blue

    Sold

A striking abstract figure painted in pastel tones in oil. Soft muted hues contrast starkly against the distinct sharp black outlines. The style of this figure is reminiscent of the figurative works by  the well known Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele whose works like this one, were often contorted, abstracted, unapologetic and emotionally charged.

The painted is housed in a cream coloured wood frame and a white card mount. The frame has some general scuffing, but is in keeping with the general ‘rough and raw’ look of the portrait. The painting is in excellent vintage condition.

  • Pulse

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A brilliantly executed  medium sized abstract composition, by Swedish artist Ivar Morsing, painted in 1958. A bold and rich colour palette of deep greens, greys and black are accentuated by yellow and white,  giving this picture its depth and intensity. Rhythmic circular brushstrokes are juxtaposed against more angular and formal shapes, encouraging our eyes to move in and around the picture and back again. The artist has filled the canvas with an array of textures – we see smooth brushwork, as well as thicker areas of impasto where the paint stands proud from the surface. There are also areas where the artist has dabbed the brush repeatedly, creating small ripples in the paint. Despite the range of colours, shapes and brushwork, there is a beautiful rhythm within the picture, and a very satisfying harmony in its composition.

The painting is housed in a very elegant smooth champagne gilt frame which illuminates the painting beautifully. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There are some very minor scuffs to the frame.

    The Guitar Player

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A very well executed mid century cubist still life, painted in oil onto canvas.

Reminiscent of works by cubist artists such as Pablo Picasso,  this painting has broken the figure and her instrument down into distinct planes, aiming to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space and so suggest their three dimensional form.  In doing so, this artist has emphasised the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth.

The painting is housed in a simple gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some scuffs and marks.

  • Together

    Sold

    SOLD.

An absolutely delightful mid century oil by Swedish artist Ivar Morsing, painted on to canvas. This seemingly simple yet very effective composition depicts figures on a beach. The artist has left out all realistic detail, using gentle yet expressive brushwork to capture the figures. There is a softness, and a tender-heartedness to the way he has captured the scene. Despite the use of the very minimalist palette, the artist has very skilfully imbued the painting with a luminosity, which is further enhanced by the gilt frame that surrounds it.

Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Urbanscape

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A very well executed mid century townscape painted in oil onto board.

The artist has eliminated all details and has reduced the forms of the buildings down into simple yet very effective planes of colour. Although the application of colour appears to be casual and loose at first glance, further observation reveals that this composition has indeed been very carefully and thoughtfully structured and put together. Loose strokes of vertical and horizontal planes of colour come together seamlessly to create this town view.

The painting is housed in its gorgeous mid century frame, which has a really lovely woven border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Fields of Gold

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking expressionist mid century landscape in oil, painted onto canvas.

Using a lively palette comprising shades of yellow, white, grey and touches of pink and green, the artist has used short and painterly brushstrokes to create this uplifting yet relaxing composition. A fence is depicted running through lush yellow fields, with a gate opening in the middle of the landscape.

Upon having a close-up look at the painting, one can notice the artist’s display of painterly skills – as he wonderfully layers colours upon one another to create this outstanding and lightly textured composition.

This oil on canvas painting is housed in a simple white painted wood frame, which suits it very well and gives it a slightly more contemporary edge. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition

A beautifully executed and distinctly modernist mid century oil portrait painted in 1951 and housed in a gilt frame.

Here we see a painting of a figure, whose details have been paired right down to distinct brushstrokes in non realistic colours. This particularly modernist ethos of focusing on  colour and form imbues the painting with a timelessness that makes it very appealing. There is a rawness to the the work that gives this painting a very striking quality.

This oil on canvas is in very good vintage condition. It is housed in a complementary gilt frame with red undertones. There are some minor scuff marks on the frame, and there is a very minor spot of paint loss on the painting.

  • Shift

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A striking and lightly textured abstract oil painting, that has been reduced down to block of colours and expressive brushstrokes.

Layers of horizontal planes of saturated colours fill the canvas, and this pattern instils a sense of orderliness in the painting.

The artist has used a lively palette, and the plethora of colours used shift between shades so harmoniously. At the top of the painting, we see planes of varying shades of blues. As we look further down, darker shades of browns and reds fill the bottom left of the work whereas yellows and orange sit at the bottom right of the work.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wooden frame. There are very minor areas of craquelure (fine cracks in the paint, commensurate with its age), but the painting is in very good vintage condition overall.

  • Siesta

    Sold

Free Shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore..

A wonderfully simple yet very effective composition, executed in oil in 1947. The artist has painted a scene of a figure lying in bed, but has paired it down to large swathes of colour and broad brushstrokes. For example, the artist has painted the figure’s head with three simple strokes in non-realistic colours. Leaving out any realistic detail, the artist uses contrasting colour very effectively, even allowing parts of the canvas to show through. The combination of minimal use of paint and effective technical skill allows us to really take in and enjoy all the discernible details while having a timelessness that enables this picture to suit many interior settings.

  • Chartreuse

    Sold

    SOLD.

A mid century abstract modernist oil, painted onto canvas.

Large gestural brushstrokes in rich earthy colours of green, brown and yellow have been applied to the canvas, creating a composition that takes its inspiration from the landscape. The sweeping of the brush work adds to the emotive impact of the painting and brings our attention to the materiality of the paint and the physical movement of the artist’s hand.

The painting is housed in a simple gilt frame which plays off the colours of the painting brilliantly. There is an area of restoration to the top half of the painting, where surface paint loss appears to have been filled in (unless viewed closely, it looks like an area of impasto rather than a condition issue). There is light scattered craquelure present but the paint layer is stable overall.

  • East and Beyond

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful abstract composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil stick and graphite onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to these paintings is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

Lloyd Durling is a British artist working in London. His practice is painting-based and he has exhibited widely throughout Europe, U.S.A and Asia. In 2017 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Works are held in both public and private collections worldwide.

  • Red Man

    Sold

    SOLD.

A well executed mid century oil on canvas depicting a standing figure.

A simple yet very effective composition – the artist draws our attention to form, line and texture. We see a rust coloured silhouette of a figure, set against a similarly sanguine background. The surface is very much textured with areas of impasto as a result of the artist’s use of a palette knife. We can discern his technique and the way in which he has chosen to layer the paint, giving this painting quite a raw effect. The scale of the figure is striking, as is the colour in which it has been painted, which has a clay like quality to it.

This oil on canvas is housed in a gilt frame with red undertones which draws out the colours of the painting well. The painting is in good vintage condition, and there are minor scuffs to the frame.

  • Terrene

An excellently executed mid century abstract oil, framed in its original wood frame.

Expressive brushwork is combined with areas of sgraffito (where the artist has used a tool to scratch into the paint) creating a range of textures as well as varying levels of depth. The restrained colour palette as well as discernible differences in methods of paint application give this painting its very raw, organic quality. Despite its abstract composition, we get a sense that the artist was inspired a connection to the natural landscape and terrain.

The painting is housed in a simple wood frame, which complements it excellently. This oil painting has been executed on a canvas sheet, that has been laid on board. Although the edges of the canvas are visible, the painting is in good vintage condition. The frame has some minor scuffs, commensurate with age.
