  • The Quiet Path

    The Quiet Path

    Sold

    SOLD

A long and narrow mid-century modernist landscape oil painting that exudes a moody and atmospheric vibe, painted in oil onto canvas.

The composition presents a rough and earthy path that leads to several dark-roofed houses in the distance surrounded by trees, creating depth and perspective.

The houses, with simplified forms, merge with the sky at dawn and rugged terrain, evoking a sense of rural quiet.

The expressive brushwork suggests a textured, almost impressionistic approach, with soft, blended tones of olive, brown, and muted greens in the landscape, a pale blue sea, and a greyish sky overhead. The trees are loosely painted with dark greens and browns, adding to the moody ambiance.

This oil on canvas housed in its original mid century frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs and paint losses, but this is quite in keeping with its vintage style.

    SOLD

An engaging and powerful abstract composition by British contemporary artist Lloyd Durling, painted in oil onto linen board. Signed, titled and dated 2024 on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

This oil on linen board is housed in a complementary walnut stained oak frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

  • Three Green Apples

    Three Green Apples

    Sold

    SOLD

A very restful mid century modernist still life, painted in oil on to canvas that has been laid onto board.

The subject of this painting focuses on a simple grouping of 3 apples, sitting on a table. The colour palette is also restrained, with mainly greens and blues. As a result of this, our focus is very much directed towards the form of the apples as well as the background, without any distraction. It draws our attention to the beauty of simplicity. The reflection of the 3 apples has been brilliantly executed, and displays the skill of the artist’s hand. The artist has created a wonderful texture to the piece using a very interesting technique of alternating the thickness of the paint, resulting in more depth and complexity.

This oil on canvas has been laid onto board, and is housed in a complementary dark wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has very slight scuffs.

  • Two Oranges

    Two Oranges

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist still life in oil, painted onto canvas.

Deep, earthy colours make up this subdued palette, which is composed of a trio of bottles and 2 oranges atop a table. There is a distinct focus on form and line, where the artist has played with the shape of the objects and their shadows against geometrical planes. Areas of impasto are visible, where the paint has been painted thickly and we can see the directional strokes of the artist’s brush, creating a painterly effect. The texture of the painted surface also adds the three dimensionality of the painting, as well as highlights the effect of light on the painting.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen border. There is a small area of paint loss at the lower right corner of the painting (as shown) but this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece.

A charming and inviting mid-century painting, executed in oil onto canvas.

  • At the Water's Edge

    At the Water’s Edge

    Sold

    SOLD

A small but very impactful mid century modernist composition in oil, painted onto canvas board.

With a distinct focus on form and colour, the artist presents two figures by a tree, painted in a semi abstract manner. There is a wonderful play of angles, line and shapes, creating different planes of colour that combine really well. The figures appear to be sitting on a river bank, with one figure looking out towards the water. The artist has contrasted the richer, earthier colours of green, brown and dark blue, against the lighter blue of the background which alludes to the water or sky.

The oil on canvas board is presented in a gilt frame that suits it very well. There is a light crease line on the canvas that has been laid to the board but this is does not detract from the overall appearance.
