  • Shapes in Motion

    Sold

    SOLD.

A striking and playful mid-century geometric abstract composition, executed in oil onto board.

Abstract and non-representational in nature, this fun and interesting composition focuses our attention on non-objective artistic elements such as colour, line, shape and form.

An array of geometric forms in different shapes and sizes have been playfully arranged across the board, imbuing the painting with dynamism as well as adding a puzzle-like effect. The artist has worked with a rich and lively colour palette, and the mix of darker and lighter shades have been evenly spread out, making the painting very well-balanced.

This oil on board is housed in a well-suited deep-profile frame. The painting has some light marks on the surface, as shown in close ups, but these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the piece. It is in very good vintage condition overall. The frame has some very light scuffing which is barely noticeable.

  • Still Life, Painted Objects

    Sold

    SOLD.

A small but powerful still life composition by British artist Lloyd Durling, painted with oil stick, oil pastel and graphite onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil stick and graphite on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

A wonderfully executed atmospheric street scene composition, dated 1955 and painted in oil onto paper.

The composition presents a small path winding through a charming neighbourhood filled with unique houses of different designs and colours. In the background, we can spot an area of blue that resembles the ocean. As our eyes rest on the painting, they follow and are guided by the houses from the left foreground to the right background, due to the striking colours of their roofs.

A subtle yet characterful abstract composition, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1982.

Abstract in nature, this composition presents a beautiful exploration of shapes, lines, colour and brushstrokes. Using a mixed selection of light muted colours as well as striking tones of orange, blue and green, the artist has embraced the layering technique – applying colours over one another in a swift yet thoughtful manner to form this wonderfully well-balanced composition. • The Painter’s Studio

    Sold

    SOLD.

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist interior scene, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1958.

While working under a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has also incorporated a playful element to the work, creating a visual puzzle for the viewer.  Intricate lines, forms, shapes and colour draw our eyes inwards encouraging us to look around this studio and build an awareness of its space and depth. There is a sense of familiarity and informality within the studio that the artist has masterfully conveyed.

The use of the Droste effect, where the artist has created a painting within a painting, creates a riddle for our eyes, beckoning us to figure out where the painting on the easel within the composition ends, and where the studio begins.  There is also the incorporation of light and shadow, but the artist has used non realistic colours to communicate this, and  has used flat planes of contrasting colours and angles to capture the light coming in through the windows of the studio.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner white slip, which suits the painting perfectly. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Cubist House

    Sold

    SOLD.

A very interesting and striking mid century cubist oil composition, painted onto board.

With a focus on form, shape, line, pattern and colour, the artist has taken an interesting perspective of a building. To the left are a set of steps, as well as green forms that appear to be trees.

Here the landscape of a house by the sea has been transformed into a series of geometric shapes. All the elements in this picture seem to sit on the same level – on the flat surface of the picture, with no foreground or background, and no illusion of receding space.
