An exuberant and playful modernist city scene, executed in oil onto canvas, by Swedish artist Uno Vallman (born 1913) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum, The Swedish Modern Museum and some other museums. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and the Tessin Institute in Paris.
Painted in a very distinctive style, the Vallman as used a plethora of rich and lively colours to create this composition of which includes colourful structures as well as figures in front of them. The flamboyant style and imaginative forms of the city buildings are reminiscent of the Catalan artist and architect Gaudí.

Set against a richly coloured background, this affectionate composition depicts two figures standing closely beside each other, with the taller figure placing her hand around the shoulder of the shorter figure. The facial features of the figures have been intentionally left out, focusing our appreciation on the qualities of colour, form, shape and brushstrokes.
Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the artist has reconstructed this scene down to blocks of contrasting colours. Wholly abstract in nature, it is tempting to try to discern what it is in front of us. Wispy, expressionist brushstrokes in contrasting tones seems to denote the play of light and shadows, and could almost appear as though the artist has tried to capture a group of feathers. Yet there is also a loose sense of the natural landscape – perhaps a row of trees of a variety of species grouped together, swaying in the wind and with light bouncing off different parts of the leaves and branches.
The beauty of the piece also lies in the way in which the artist draws our attention the medium. The oil has been thinned, creating a loose and free quality to the paint. In certain areas the artist has allowed the paint to drip down, emphasising the freedom of the medium and its composition.
