A brilliantly executed mid century modernist figure scene, painted in oil onto board by the established Swedish female artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).

In this vivid and richly coloured composition that is brimming with energy, we see a group of three figures walking together in the same direction, and can discern a townscape in the backdrop.

Painted in a semi-abstract manner, the scene have been simplified and abstracted down to painterly and expressive brushstrokes as well as juxtaposing saturated colours. The figures are position against a richly coloured background consisting primarily of yellow shades, and the contrast in tones further enhances the striking colours of the figures.

This oil on canvas is housed in a very complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has scuffs, and paint loss at its left edge as shown in the close up.

As a viewer we appear to be standing on a rooftop or balcony, looking out towards the view. We can almost imagine the artist painting the view before him ‘en plein air’, capturing the shapes and forms of the houses and buildings as they weave in and out of each other.. There is great depth to the painting, as the layers of buildings lead our eyes further into the picture. The artist has painted in an expressionist style, with broad and gestural brushstrokes, using a non naturalistic palette.
