    Stacked Objects on Red

    Sold

    SOLD

A captivating original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with carved patterns. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Quay Cranes

    Quay Cranes

    Sold

    SOLD

A brilliantly executed mid century modernist seascape composition in oil, painted into board and dated 1945.

This nautical piece depicts a winter harbourside scene, with boats docked by harbour cranes. In the distance beyond the boats, the composition is balanced by tall trees, creating depth within the picture. The painting is wonderfully textured with a matte effect and has a very painterly feel. The artist has used a range of gentle but diaphanous colours, capturing the beautiful light that is cast on this winter’s day. The blues and mustard tones of the boats also contrast with the whites of the ice and the snow.

Overall, this winter harbour scene has a very tranquil and restful feel to it. It captures the essence of a winter day beautifully, and would make a brilliant piece to rest tired eyes on.

A mid-century abstract landscape that evokes a melancholic atmosphere, resembling a rainy day in nature, executed in tempera onto canvas.

The artist has skilfully employed tempera with fluid brushstrokes, creating a sense of motion and mood. Drips of paint descend from the sky-like region, enhancing the feeling of rain. The colour palette is subdued and earthy, with shades of grey, muted greens, cream, and yellow blending into a soft, atmospheric haze.

This tempera on canvas is housed in a complementary tray frame with a silver border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition
