  • Yellow & Green Ball

    Yellow & Green Ball

    Sold

    SOLD

A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 on the reverse by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the green and yellow circles, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This painting is wonderfully presented in a distressed style frame with ridge detail, and an inner linen-lined border and gilt window. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

In the background, the sun is slowly setting down. In the middle ground, two small figures can be seen strolling along a path, their silhouettes barely distinguishable.

Expressive brushstrokes dance across the surface, imbuing the scene with a dynamic energy that contrasts with the stillness of the houses. The use of a muted palette adds to the overall sense of mystery and moodiness of the painting.

This oil on board is housed in a stunning wood frame with an inner linen border and gilt window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has slight scuffing present to its edges.

    Size: 62.5 x 71.5 cm (including frame)

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist style still life composition, executed in oil and dated 1954.

Featuring flat planes of colour, clean lines, and a myriad of shapes, this modernist still life certainly holds our attention.

With an array of objects laid across a table, our eyes are encouraged to span the long horizontal layout. Simple day-to-day objects such as a jug, some apples and oranges in a glass bowl, and a pitcher are brought centre stage by the artist, beckoning us to appreciate their individual forms and the way each shape, colour, and line communicates and juxtaposes with another to create this balanced composition.

This oil on canvas has been laid onto board, and is housed in a beautiful distressed wood frame with an inner white border that pairs wonderfully with the painting.  The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has widening present at its corner joins.

  • Essence of Earth

    Essence of Earth

    Sold

    SOLD.

A minimalist abstract composition that captivates with its simplicity and subtle complexity, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1970 on verso.

In the lower section, a solid block of forest green grounds the composition, representing the earth. A faint black line hovers above, suggestive of a horizon. Above this line, a serene block of cream fills the top half of the canvas, evoking a vast expanse of sky. At the pinnacle, a luminous white circle glows softly, reminiscent of a sun.

While abstract in nature, the painting subtly suggests a landscape bathed in the light of a radiant sun. Its minimalistic composition and gradients echo the emotive resonance often found in the works of American abstract painter Mark Rothko (1903-1970), inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay of light, space, and colour.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver painted frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

    Size: 82.5 x 61 cm (including frame)
