A compelling mid-century painting that presents an abstracted interior scene rendered in a cubist style, executed in oil onto board and dated 1966 by the established Swedish artist Richard Björklund (1897–1974), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmo Museum, Ystads Art Museum, and others.
The composition is built from interlocking geometric blocks of colour, suggesting architectural forms, furniture, and a seated figure to the right. The artist breaks the interior down into a rhythmic arrangement of rectangles and planes, creating a layered sense of depth while preserving a flattened, modernist aesthetic.
The palette is dominated by muted mauves, greys, and blacks, enlivened with striking accents of cobalt blue and deep crimson. These colours are applied in confident, opaque blocks, their edges sometimes softened by visible brushstrokes that reveal the artist’s hand. The brushwork is assertive, giving the impression of both structure and spontaneity.
Hints of a chair, a table, and a figure are discernible but dissolve into abstraction, leaving the viewer to navigate between representation and geometry. This work reflects the mid-century embrace of cubist abstraction, balancing formal rigour with expressive colour.
This oil on board is presented in a complementary silver painted frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs as well as losses as shown in the photos.
