  • Rising Grey Green

    £650

    Available

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

An engaging and powerful abstract composition by British contemporary artist Lloyd Durling, painted in oil onto linen panel. Signed, titled and dated 2024 on reverse.

Central to this painting is an intense engagement with oil on linen that explore the interface between painting, drawing and collage. There is a balance between expressive play and tight control and with this comes an expanse of associations that push beyond simple categorisations of abstraction or scale. The information in each painting, given by gesture or mark, is reduced to a fleeting register on the surface, as if each mark has to count.

The idea of topography is of central importance and is explored through continuing walking projects. These serve as opportunities to gather diverse source material through physical and emotional interactions with whichever environment chosen to traverse. It amounts to a kind of urban and rural wandering where the information gathered is reinterpreted or reimagined feeding into a deep connection with landscape, arrangements of ancient monuments, light, shadow and forgotten histories – all of these elements find a way into the work.

This oil on linen board is housed in a complementary walnut stained oak frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

    Size: 50 x 40 cm (including frame)

  • Stacked Objects on Red

    £760

    Available

Free shipping to UK, Europe and Singapore.

A captivating original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1969 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of unidentified objects including vessels with circular tops are set against an off white surface with a splash of striking red. This still life leans towards abstraction, with the artist focusing on the forms of the objects and how the elements interact with one another. There is an invisible tension between the objects, as they push and pull against one another. However, there is a very balanced rhythm through the picture, encouraging us viewers to weave our view in and out, up and down and around the composition to explore the form of each object. The artist has used a relatively monochrome palette with pops of colour including the green and yellow circles and red backdrop, which draw our eye to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with carved patterns. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Coastal Conversations

    Sold

    SOLD

An engaging abstract composition by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, executed in acrylic onto canvas and dated 2021.
Coastal Conversations is a love letter to Cornwall, capturing the essence of this enchanting region. The calming blues of a sea in peak summer, the crashing waves, and busy harbours. These colours work together to evoke the peaceful feeling of the coast, stirring memories of bare feet digging into the sand, feeling the warm sun’s gentle embrace, and cooling off in the cold English sea.

This acrylic on canvas is framed within a white wooden frame with the edges of the canvas visible, capturing the complexity of the colours within. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition. The artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity and signature on the reverse.

  • Untitled

    Sold

    SOLD

A unique abstract collograph by contemporary British artist Frances Daws, executed with carbon black oil on fabriano printmaking paper, and beautifully presented in a double card mount with blue detail, within a gilt frame.

This collograph is described as such because the base of the plate is cardboard rather than metal. Frances would have started with a shiny surface, carving away to reveal the matt surface underneath. This is an intaglio method where the ink stays within the recess, once the plate is sealed and inked up it is then printed through a press; a heavy metal roller on a flat bed. The pressure transfers the print onto dampened paper. With this particular print Frances used papers and texture to add colour while the plate was printed in carbon black oil based ink on fabriano printmaking paper. She decided to only print this plate once which is why it’s a 1/1 , making it entirely unique.

A rich and vivid modernist composition, painted in oil onto canvas.

With a myriad of bold and striking colours in a series of geometric shapes, we can discern an interior scene. A framed painting of flowers hangs against a brick wall, and to the right a range of vessels sit on a table with their shadows cast against the wall behind them. The artist has not used the traditional and realistic angles, and has instead flattened the perspective and used multiple angles within the composition. The artist explores the formal elements of shape, line, colour and pattern to create this cubist composition.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there are minor scuffs present to the inner silver border of the frame.

    Portrait of a Troubled Soul

This mid-century expressive and emotive oil portrait delves into the depths of the human psyche with an intriguing depiction of a male figure in a brown shirt.

The face of the figure appears slightly distorted, contributing to an atmosphere of unease and ambiguity. Through the semi-abstract portrayal, the artist captures the complex and often contradictory nature of human emotions and thoughts.

The painting’s expressive brushwork is forceful and emotive, adding layers of intensity to the composition. Reminiscent of the works of Irish-born British figurative painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992), the piece explores themes of inner turmoil.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has light craquelure at its top right section but the paint layer is stable. The frame edges have some losses but this is in keeping with its overall distressed vintage style.

    Size: 65.5 x 54 cm (including frame)

A striking original mid century modernist composition, painted onto board and dated 1968 by the established Swedish artist Gunnar Hållander (1915-1980), whose artworks have been represented in public collections including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Sundsvall Museum, and the Institut Tessinin in Paris.

A group of mostly unidentifiable objects in a very restrained palette sit against a grey background. The artist uses a restrained palette – the picture is almost monochrome, except for the pops of orange and pink, which draws our eyes to the centre of the picture. There is a wonderful depth to the composition, as well as a very satisfying matte finish to the overall surface.

This original oil on board is wonderfully presented in a distressed frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has slight wear but this suits its overall distressed style.

    Size: 65.6 x 74.5 cm (including frame)

    The Bouquet

A very unique and vivid mid century semi abstract oil composition, painted on board and dated 1964 on the reverse.

In this composition  we see a vase of flowers which have been painted in a semi-abstract modernist style. The artist has intentionally chosen now to focus on the realistic forms of the florals, and has instead drawn attention to the shapes, colours and lines of the bouquet. Its formal elements are echoed in the background which appears to be the framework of a window, creating a really fun and striking picture. The bright colours contrast against the bold, black outlines and the starkly white vase.

This brilliantly executed oil on board is housed in a wide profile wood frame with decorative carvings. The painting is in good vintage condition, and the frame has some minor scuffing as shown.
