Winter Rooftops
SOLD.
A small but stunning mid century modernist landscape composition in oil, painted in 1959.
This excellently proportioned composition features the snow covered rooftops of a group of houses, painted in a soothing and subtle colour palette. The artist guides us into appreciating the formal qualities of this scene, such as the angular lines and shapes of the roofs, doors and windows, the geometry of the houses stacked up against each other and the repeated patterns created by colour, shape and line. Contrasted against the very angular structures of the buildings are the more free flowing trees, whose branches peek out above the rooftops. The red and ochre walls of the houses and the blue of the sky stand out beautifully against the large planes of white snow.
This painting is housed in a very well suited gilt frame with a lighter inner window. Both painting and frame are in very good vintage condition.
