Stroll Above the Bay

A lively mid-century expressionist landscape painting, executed in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

This joyful painting captures three figures pausing on a grassy headland as they overlook a tranquil stretch of water framed by sculptural coastal pines. The sweeping composition draws the eye between the distinctive wind-shaped trees towards the shimmering bay beyond, while rolling green hills and rugged shoreline create a lively sense of place. Rather than pursuing realism, the artist distils the landscape into expressive forms, celebrating the harmony between nature and the quiet presence of people within it.

Executed in a highly expressive, naïve modernist style, the composition is defined by bold outlines, flattened perspective and simplified organic shapes. The twisted crimson tree trunks become rhythmic anchors within the scene, while the figures are rendered with minimal detail, contributing to the painting’s spontaneous charm and decorative quality.

The palette is vibrant yet harmonious, dominated by fresh spring greens, turquoise-blue water and a pale sky infused with soft blush-pink undertones. Rich crimson reds animate the tree trunks and are echoed subtly in the clothing of the figures and the flowering vegetation, creating visual rhythm across the composition. Crisp black contours unify the forms, while touches of white lend brightness and movement to the sea and landscape.

The brushwork is energetic and confident, with visible, textured strokes applied in broad passages that allow the weave of the canvas to remain evident in places. Loose, gestural marks and expressive layering create a lively surface full of character, while the deliberate outlining of forms gives the composition clarity and a distinctly graphic quality.
