Where the Light Settles

An atmospheric abstract landscape composition that distils the essence of a quiet horizon into a series of gestural forms and atmospheric colour fields, painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

The composition suggests a windswept coastal plain or open countryside, where low-lying landforms emerge from a luminous expanse of sky. Rather than depicting a specific location, the artist captures a fleeting impression of place – one shaped by memory, mood, and light.

The painting balances abstraction and landscape, reducing natural forms to expressive strokes and simplified masses. The restrained composition creates a sense of openness and stillness, inviting contemplation while allowing the viewer’s imagination to complete the scene.

A subtle palette of soft ivory, pale blue, warm browns, slate grey, and earthy umber lends the work a gentle, atmospheric quality. Delicate accents of golden yellow punctuate the horizon, suggesting sunlight breaking through distant forms and providing warmth against the cooler tones.

The brushwork is confident and expressive, lending texture and movement across the painted surface. Broad, sweeping strokes define the sky, while layered, energetic marks in the foreground create a sense of depth and shifting terrain. The varied application of paint – from thin washes to thicker passages – imbues the work with a tactile quality.

This oil on board is presented in a beautiful frame with a warm gilt finish and stepped moulding profile. Both the painting and frame are excellent vintage condition.
