Presence in Shadow

A  compelling and emotive mid-century abstract figurative composition that presents a solitary seated figure reduced to a series of expressive, interlocking forms, executed in oil onto board.

The subject emerges from the surface through broad passages of dark paint, with the head and torso only loosely defined, inviting the viewer to engage with the work on an emotional rather than literal level. The figure appears suspended between abstraction and representation, conveying a sense of quiet introspection and psychological depth.

There is some craquelure visible across areas of the painted surface, consistent with the age of the work; however, it appears stable and does not detract from the overall presentation.
